LA Times Media Group Creates New Position: Senior VP, Digital

It’s not every day that a newspaper company hire can point to a job slot having been especially created for them. But those are now the bragging rights of Emily Smith, a former Disney Interactive Media Group exec.

Smith is the Los Angeles Times Media Group’s first ever senior vice president, digital. As such, she will oversee the development of new products and business partnerships for all of the company’s digital properties (,,, etc.), hoping no doubt to monetize the endless Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and foursquare opportunities. Per this morning’s press release:

Smith is the first hire of Times president and chief operating officer Kathy Thomson, signaling The Times’ focus on identifying new or underserved audiences, designing and implementing go-to-market strategies, and creating digital solutions that anticipate the needs of our readers, communities, advertisers and sponsors.

At press time, there is the slight embarrassment of the official announcement at being accompanied by an awkwardly ratio-ed digital photo of Smith. Oops.
