Layoffs Come to English Papers

us-layoff-job-cut.jpgThe Daily Mail and General Trust media group, which publishes roughly 100 regional titles in the United Kingdom, will let go 1,000 staffers from its Northcliffe Media division as a result of plunging ad revenue. The number of layoffs has shot up from the roughly 500 predicted in late 2008.

According to DMGT finance director, Peter Williams the “vast majority [of the cuts] have happened or are in consultation.”

In total, DMGT has seen advertising revenue fall by 24 percent in the first quarter, while its off 37 percent at Northcliffe.

The announcement comes two months after the Financial Times said it would lay off 80. Other papers across the Pond are struggling as well.
