Lunch at Michael's: ASME Editors, Portfolio's Publisher And Chris Meigher Promises To Get To The Bottom Of This
Magazine people were the metaphorical Heathers today, with ASME's editorial firepower on display in the bay window and with David Carey, Richard Beckman, and other publishers wandering around. We were at the bar with the HuffPo's/Eat The Press' Rachel Sklar. (And despite what you may have heard about my finances today, lunch was still on Laurel.) The roll call: Table 1: The regular ASME editors luncheon, chaired by ASME president/Glamour editor Cindi Leive, with VP/Texas Monthly editor Evan Smith and Self's Lucy Danziger. There was another editor hiding somewhere in the bay window, but we didn't recognize her on sight. 2. Court TV's (can we still call him that?) Henry Schleiff with an unidentified guest. 3. Time Inc. editor-in-chief John Huey lunching with Time Warner's top flack, Ed Adler, whose manner toward media reporters, from all accounts, is similar to the grumpy neighbor we lived next door to growing up. (Damn kids! Get off my lawn!) 4. William Morris literary agent Owen Laster with his former colleague Joni Evans, who went solo back in January. Gossip's doyenne, Liz Smith, pulled up a chair for a while, but she eventually retreated to Table 5... 5. ...where she lunched with her editor from Good Housekeeping. 6. There were a gaggle of young women at this table, which we discovered later were the charges of Marie Claire publisher Susan Plagemann, enjoying a morale-boosting team lunch. 7. Shari Scharfer Rolllins with NBC local's Felicia Taylor and FT publicist Jolie Hunt 8. The inimitable David Patrick Columbia, who somehow managed to separate lunch partner Andrew Saffir from Daniel Benedict. (Just run their names through Google Images and you'll know what we mean.) 9. Cablevision's Barry Frey, with a guest. 11. Classic Media's Bob Friedman, along with a guest we couldn't spot. 12. Conde Nast Portfolio publisher David Carey, who strode in with some sort of backpack on his shoulder, rather than carrying an actual portfolio. (Don't worry David, our check for $12 is already in the mail.) 14. Allen & Co.'s Stan Shuman with fellow i-banker John Josephson. 15. We heard this was Bob Tobin and a guest over here along the wall, but because he doesn't eat lunch at Michael's every single day, we're not sure if we've spotted him correctly. 16. An unconfirmed sighting of "Mark Victor" with a pair of guests, but we're wondering if our source didn't mean Ed Victor. 17. Lambertson & Truex president Michelle Ateyah. 18. Photojournalist Harry Benson, with Tiffy & Co.'s design director John Loring. 19. No names for you today, although we can say it appeared to be a mother-daughter combo (or at least the age gap and the maternal pride on display suggested as much) who were very familiar with DPC. [Update: We now hear this was "real estate barracuda and 'Alice Mason-in-training'" Patricia Burnham with the younger woman.] 20. Lori Rhodes, executive marketing director of Shop Etc., likely out with a client. 21. Quest's Chris Meigher who has made us an offer we can't refuse -- a chance to get to the bottom of the mystery of Michael's, namely: how did everyone know to stop having lunch at the Royalton and move up here? He's promised to put us onto the truth, provided we write about it for Quest. (But don't worry -- it'll end up on Fishbowl not long after that). 22. The aforementioned David Adler of BizBash. 23. Conde Nast Media Group president Richard "Mad Dog" Beckman, with a group of older gentlemen likely looking to buy some ad pages. We like to think that as Jason Statham starts to slip into comfortable middle age, he'll come to resemble Beckman... 24. We caught the second seating, at least: Steve Wasserman, a director of the literary agency Kneerim & Williams and former LA Times book review editor. 25. Ad legend (and former BBDO chairman) Phil Dusenberry with Chuck Pfeiffer. 26. Designer Steven Stolman and Women's Wear Daily's Marc Karimzadeh. 27. Sirius consultant Walter Sabo lunching with Reese Schoenfeld, the founding president of CNN. 28. Scott Schiller. 29. The Financial Times' U.S. managing editor, Chrystia Freeland. 30. And finally, Ron Perelman's publicist, the very lovely Chris Taylor. Please send any and all correct spellings, additions, and what-have-you to Greg at babelfish dot NET, and FishbowlNY AT mediabistro DOT com. Map of Michael's Email This Post |
