Luxury Magazines Rising

It is perhaps instructive at this point in time to briefly meditate upon the sudden rise of luxury magazines as the sparkle of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week slowly evaporates like a glass of champagne left untended. As Anna Wintour took a victory lap around town as much on her social position at the top of the fashion world food chain as on the merits of her record-breaking September Vogue issue, which defied the downward gravitational pull of print media in decline.

Fortune Magazine is getting in on the super-hot luxe life act. Luxury, is ”in”; everyone is trying to steer their coverage towards the robust ad markets — jewels, cars — of the style set. From WWD:

”Fortune decided to make its annual luxury issue all about fashion — at least on the cover — by choosing to highlight pieces on Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs and Brooks Brothers. And while the cover may seem a departure for the business title, it’s another indicator the magazine is serious about the luxury category — and its ad dollars. The issue comes about a year after Fortune hired assistant managing editor John Brodie to cover luxury.

”And Brodie confirmed the magazine plans to do more stories on ‘the business of style’ in the future.”

A good plan, as the luxury magazine set is generally immune to the slings and arrows of outrageous housing crunch. Old money is old for a reason.
