2006 Ellies: Time, New York, VQR, New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Esquire All Get 2, Toss Atlantic Shut Out
The bigger, badder, sexier National Magazine Awards were held at Lincoln Center on Tuesday evening, and there were plenty to go around. Time, New York, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Esquire and the Virginia Quarterly Review each received a pair of Ellies. The Atlantic Monthly, however, was shut out despite being nominated for 8 awards more than any other magazine. Time won for general excellence for a magazine with a circulation of over 2,000,000. It was Time's first in that category since 1985. The Virginia Quarterly Review nominated for five Ellies won two including general excellence, under 100,000 circulation. Dave Eggers' The Believer and McSweeney's lost in general excellence and fiction writing, respectively. Men's Health and editor David Zinczenko, too, were shut out, though fellow Rodale title Backpacker won for best magazine section, which prompted a candid, uproarious acceptance speech by its editor Jon Dorn. Dorn said that after observing Zinczenko in the company's Emmaus, Pennsylvania gym, Zinczenko, in fact, has the "best ass" at Rodale. More on Dorn's comments and FishbowlNY's generally excellent thoughts and notes on the evening TK.
