Editor Tom Foster Resigns from Men's Journal

tfosterparadise.jpgTrouble in "paradise"?

Tom Foster, editor-in-chief, Men's Journal, Monday:

"The conventional wisdom in the magazine world is that you have to job-hop to get ahead — that's not necessarily true. I got the job because I had been there and knew the magazine through its various forms."

Today:

Tom Foster, editor of Men's Journal, has resigned, citing irreconcilable differences with Jann Wenner. He'll be out of the office by 1 p.m. today.

WENNER MEDIA NAMES JAMES KAMINSKY EDITOR OF MEN'S JOURNAL

NEW YORK, January 31, 2007 -- Wenner Media Chairman Jann Wenner announced today that James Kaminsky has been named editor of Men's Journal. Kaminsky replaces Tom Foster, who has decided to leave the company to pursue other opportunities.

Kaminsky was most recently deputy managing editor of Rolling Stone, a position he held since January 2005, where he helped oversee longform features and the magazine's pop culture and media coverage. Prior to Rolling Stone, Kaminsky served as the third editorial director in Playboy magazine's 50 year history, managing all aspects of content, design, staffing, and long term strategic planning. From 1999 to late 2002 he was executive editor of Maxim, helping oversee all facets of the magazine during its circulation trajectory from 600,000 to 2.5 million, one of the fastest growth tracks in publishing history. Kaminsky worked at Men's Journal in its early, formative days; prior to a stint as a top editor at Condé Nast Sports for Women, he was Men's Journal's senior editor starting in 1994, editing such top writers as Jon Krakauer and serving as the launch editor-in-chief of The Men's Journal Buyer's Guide, a best selling newsstand spinoff. Kaminsky has written for a wide range of publications, including The New York Times, GQ, Details and The Village Voice.

"Men's Journal is an amazing template -- a great combination of the best adventure and travel stories, unforgettable longform narrative journalism, beautiful, transporting photography and some of the best service journalism of any men's magazine." said Kaminsky. "I couldn't be more thrilled to return to the magazine to lead the process of making this unique mix stronger than ever and help further define the concept of the adventure lifestyle for a new generation of readers."

Men's Journal's ad pages were up 5.4% in 2006, while total ad revenue increased 16% during the same period. In addition to Men's Journal, Wenner Media also publishes Rolling Stone and Us Weekly.
