In Your Face, NY: FishbowlNY Gets Its Hands On Time Out New York's 3D Issue

tony_3d_7.6.10.jpgWe've previously written about 3D ads appearing in China's Shiyan Evening News (dinosaurs!) and in The Sun (balls!), a 3D centerfold in Playboy (breasticles!), and a bit of 3D sprinkled among the pages of the Inquirer (stuff!). Now, Time Out NY has introduced an entire issue in 3D -- and we're among the first to get our hands on it before it hits newsstands tomorrow.

The issue, which comes with a pair of 3D glasses tucked inside, not only features a 3D cover and 3D articles, but 20 3D ads as well.

Explains TONY editor in chief Michael Freidson:

Every image in the issue will be in 3-D, from our cover shot of the new Brooklyn Bridge Park to the inside photos of museum exhibits, juicy sandwiches, outdoor concerts, big summer movies—everything. Each week we try to make New York come to life. This issue ought to help us do that.

The issue's release is being celebrated with the first outdoor digital 3D movie screening of Monsters vs. Aliens, which will take place July 15th at Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1 as part of the "Movies With A View" series presented by Syfy. Which is, admit it, pretty adorable.

So, what are some things you can look forward to seeing in three (3) stunning dimensions within this issue? Here's a quick rundown:

• Meatloaf! (The singer, not the foodstuff.) Wearing some kind of crazy knife-ring!

• King Tut! Raising from the dead and raising hell at the Brooklyn Museum!

• Comic strip of a dog vomiting rainbows!

• Dude tossing a frisbee in Brooklyn Bridge Park! Right at your freakin' face!

• Pretty hydrangeas in Fort Tryon Park! Hey, I've never been there! I should visit it soon!

• Woman aiming some archery-related thing at your eye!

• DEEP FRIED HOT DOGS!

Many of the images, especially actions of people around the city, do seem carefully orchestrated to make the most of the magazine's 3D presentation. Check it out when it hits stands tomorrow, July 7th, and let us know what you think. Is 3D something you'd be interested in seeing more of in newspapers and magazines?

DIY Editing

Every writer needs an editor. But sometimes, because you're on deadline, or you're a freelancer, or the fates have conspired against you, you have to be both writer and editor at the same time. Which sounds like a prescription for schizophrenia.

There is a solution that does not involve medication. Check out the quick tips in the video Learn How to Line Edit Your Own Writing. The instructor is June Casagrande, author of Grammar Snobs Are Great Big Meanies and It Was the Best of Sentences, It Was the Worst of Sentences and the language column "A Word, Please."
