Media Miscellany: 07.25.2005You'd seriously have to be psycho to work at The Source: First the hip-hop mag is revealed as an (allegedly) seething den of sexism, harassment and retributory employment decisions when ex-EIC Kimberly Osario and former Marketing VP Michelle Joyce bring a harassment suit against rapper/president Benzino Scott and co-founder David Mays. Which is bad enough but after this weekend it's clear that The Source is just flat-out dangerous after the magazine's general manager, Leroy (Bum) Peeples and salesman Alvin Childs were arrested for shooting a rapper in the head over whether or not to play a rap CD. Infreakingsane. In addition to rapper Orlando Orenga, his cousin Alex Colon was shot in the arm and leg and a busboy was shot in the torso. There is no punchline for this other than to say that the culture at the The Source is clearly not for everyone. [NYDN] Radar's "Fresh Intelligence" tackles "Tucker," disses "Dancing": Writing that headline felt like a grammar test. Let me know if I got it wrong. Radar calls out Tucker Carlson and his "towel-snapping brand of conservatism," saying that his show was premised on the promise of fiery debate with high-profile guests like Jon Stewart but that he's failed miserably to deliver. Radar's MSNBC insider source says that Carlson isn't on the block yet, despite dire predictions from "industry insiders." Meanwhile, apparently J. Peterman(aka John O'Hurley) is crying foul about the outcome of "Dancing With The Stars," claiming that ABC rigged Kelly Monaco to win in order to prop up General Hospital's ratings. Apparently Monaco slipped up a few times in her final number, for which she and hot Alec were awarded a series of perfect 10s. John O'Hurley, if you looked like Kelly Monaco in barely-there sequins you'd have better luck at scoring a perfect 10 too. Radar and ABC seem to imply that he's being a sore loser; we forgive him just for lookin' so fierce in that matador number. [Radar Online] A [Quick &] Simple plan: Hearst is set to launch service book Quick & Simple on August 2nd, planning on distribution of 500,000 at a $1.49 cover price. Former Rosie editor Susan Toepfer is EIC. Target audience: "mid-30s single women and mothers." Expect MAJOR overlap with The Source. [MediaWeek] Email This Post |
