Martha Stewart Omnimedia, operator of Martha Stewart Living and many other media properties related to Martha Stewart, today reported a first-quarter loss of $3.9 million, up from a loss of $16.8 million in the first-quarter of 2009.
The publishing division registered an operating loss of $1.1 million, a narrower loss than the $1.9 million it lost in the first quarter of 2009. Martha Stewart Living saw a 20% increase in ad pages for its April issue, the company said. Martha Stewart Omnimedia’s internet business lost $1.1 million on the quarter, vs. a loss of $2 million a year ago.
Revenue from publishing was $ 28.3 million, down from $28.4 million in the year-ago quarter. The company’s internet segment contributed $3.1 million, up 19%. Broadcast revenue climbed 15% to $12.1 million, and merchandising revenue jumped 10% to $9.8 million.
