The Huffington Post Expands Its Global Coverage with Launch of World Section

New York, NY, Dec 4 -- The Huffington Post a leading news and opinion site, is launching a World section with top news and opinion from around the globe. The World "vertical" brings HuffPost's signature blend of news, commentary, video and community to coverage of international affairs. The section features analysis from experts on US foreign policy and from bloggers situated around the world. The World section includes content from editorial partners with correspondents in more than 50 countries and is the latest content vertical to be added to The Huffington Post, which continues its expansion as "The Internet Newspaper."

"As the recent Mumbai attacks made so painfully clear, the international community is now more interconnected than ever, and readers around the world are keen to know what's happening beyond their borders," said Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post. "From regional politics and human rights to the global environmental and financial crises, readers from the US and abroad have been asking us to expand our coverage to encompass more of the world. We're thrilled to be offering a new platform to highlight important global stories and voices."

The World section brings together a diverse and expanding group of foreign policy experts and advocates, as well as voices from around the globe, including India, Cuba, Venezuela, Egypt, Israel, Russia, Congo, and China. Among the bloggers participating in the launch of the vertical: Queen Noor of Jordan; John Kerry, senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee; Joseph Nye, Harvard professor who coined the term "soft power"; Haleh Esfandiari, an Iranian-American scholar with the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington; Yoani Sanchez, a Cuban blogger named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2008; Daoud Kuttab, an award-winning Palestinian journalist and former Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University; Francisco Toro, a Venezuelan journalist, political scientist and blogger; and Oleg Kozlovsky, a Russian activist and winner of the 2008 Human Rights First award for his use of the Internet to promote democratic change in his home country.

The World vertical's news offering includes content from partner GlobalPost.com, an American-based international news site launching January 12. In addition, the World section covers culture from around the globe -- from arts and literature to music and film. The section features a weekly World Music Corner highlighting musicians and musical trends around the world, including a profile of a famous Iranian hip hop artist who is the first and only rapper legally allowed to release his music in Iran.

Said James Smith, chief revenue officer of The Huffington Post, "HuffPost's affluent, educated and curious audience has long expressed a great interest in more global coverage. With the new World vertical, we're giving them more of what they want. The section also enables us to continue to appeal to select marketers interested in a sophisticated environment in which to convey their messages."
