Martha Martha Martha!
"We're going to do some investigating to see if this event was directly related to her employment," said party pooper Chris Stanton, chief federal probation officer for the Southern District of New York, according to yesterday's New York Post. Meanwhile, our plucky, apple-cheeked Martha had totally gotten permission from his office to attend. But apparently Chris & co. were taken aback that the event was billed as "a celebration." Gee, a black-tie gala with 99 other assorted luminaries atop the freaking Time Warner Center - tough to call that it might be a fancy party. Isn't it enough that her request to have the home-confinement thing lifted was denied? Parse terms like "celebration" all you want, Chris - the damn thing is a work event if there ever was one. Not only could her stock use the help - there's 5 months of prison to make up for! - but consider the incontrovertible evidence of the guest list: Time's Jim Kelly describes the evening thus: More than 50 influentials attended, and several of them-Bill Belichick, Martha Stewart, the architect Santiago Calatrava, the Dutch women's-rights advocate Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the Indian superstar Aishwarya Rai and Eliot Spitzer--toasted those who had influenced them. Woohoo! Partying with Dutch women's-rights advocate Ayaan Hirsi Ali! Rock the Casbah, Aishwarya Rai! Chug, Eliot, Chug! Dudes, the thing was work. Drop it - we all know you're just jealous.
