Page Six's Paula Froelich On Her Novel's Inspiration: "All Three Main Characters Are A Part Of Me"
"I wrote a novel because -- well, I've always been a good story teller and thought, if I can write the way I talk: it'll be amazing!" she told FishbowlNY. "I just wanted to write about women in general." Read on for more insight on "Mercury" from the author The story follows three New York City women: intrepid reporter for the New York Telegraph Penelope Mercury, socialite Lena "Lipstick" Lippencrass and high powered attorney Dana Gluck. And since the title refers to the astrological phenomenon that many blame for rough times during their lives, you can imagine that each character is dealing with her own personal trials. "A little while ago, I went through a really bad two year period and an astrologer told me, 'Darlin, Mercury's in retrograde,' to which I said, 'Well, it's BEEN there for like two years -- when's it getting out???'" Froelich told us. "And I realized I wasn't the only one going through a bit of a rough time. Everyone hits a period, usually late twenties, early to mid-thirties, where they're trying to figure stuff out, and life just doesn't go the way you'd planned it." And if any of the characters seem familiar, it's because they are amalgams of many different people, including some bold faced names, Froelich said. "No one person is one true portrayal of an actual person," she said. "In fact, yesterday someone who is doing a piece on my book said, 'You put me in a really bad spot. I read the book and I cant believe you put my boss in there!' I had to tell him that despite a similarity of names, it wasn't his boss at all -- it was two other people." But the three main characters -- Mercury, Dana and Lipstick -- all hold a special place in the authors heart. "All three main characters are a part of me," she said. "And my friends!"
