Well, today, to be precise: today the city will defend Mayor Bloomberg's decision to yank a permit from Ecko Unlimited and designer Mark Ecko for a street party on Wednesday which will feature graffiti artists spray-painting on replicas of subway cars. The permit was approved but then pulled after Bloomberg fretted that it would encourage actual subway vandalism. Bloomberg is so the dad from Footloose. At the initial hearing on Friday, the Judge seemed confused and asked if, following that logic, the city would seek to curtail gang warfare by banning "West Side Story" (never mind that "Avenue Q" has made all of our puppets totally gay).

Naturally, our favorite hyphenate Bucky Turco is on top of the story, tipping Gothamist off Friday with nuggets from Ecko's press conference, including where he points out that graffiti art has a distinguished history represented in museums across town; reminds Bloomberg that the subway cars in question are actually two-dimensional pretend subway cars; and invites him to spray it, don't say it with his very own graffiti art at the event. Also, apparently Ecko has already laid out about $190,000 ; for the event clearly he's burnin' yearnin' for someone to tell him that life ain't just passing him by. We hope Bloomberg comes to his senses and permits the permit and then he, Bucky and Ecko can dance and paint with wild, feral abandon. No doubt Bucky would phone it in and we'd read about it the next day in the Post.
