Jill Abramson to Teach at Harvard (FishbowlNY)
Jill Abramson, the former executive editor of The New York Times who was unceremoniously fired last month, has a new gig — teacher. Abramson is joining Harvard University’s English department this coming fall to teach undergraduate courses on narrative nonfiction. NYT Abramson, the first woman to hold the top editing post at the Times, was abruptly dismissed last month by the newspaper’s publisher, Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. Her firing stunned the Times newsroom and the media world in general. Sulzberger said she was dismissed because of her management style, while other published accounts said she was paid less than her predecessor, Bill Keller, an allegation that Sulzberger denied. Capital New York Abramson, a Harvard alum, will hold the title of visiting lecturer at the university for the 2014-2015 school year. COO of Twitter Resigns Via Tweet (SocialTimes)
The COO of Twitter, Ali Rowghani, announced his resignation on the social network Thursday. The announcement came a day after Re/code reported on internal tension over Rowghani’s role at the company. Re/code The move is likely to reinforce the image of Twitter as a bit of a revolving door and a place of management chaos. Others think the fixing of an exec structure that is not working is a good thing. NYT Rowghani resigned after months of watching his responsibilities shrink at the company. Twitter said in a securities filing that it did not intend to appoint anyone else to that position. Variety Twitter’s shares shot up 73 percent when the company launched its IPO in November, but since then the stock has dropped about 21 percent. The company has posted revenue gains but Wall Street has been concerned that Twitter’s user growth is slower than expected. Rowghani joined Twitter in March 2010 after nine years with Pixar Animation Studios, where was CFO and SVP of strategic planning for Pixar, Disney Animation Studios and Disney Toon Studios. WSJ Twitter disclosed the news in a regulatory filing, which stated Rowghani will continue to be employed by the company, acting as an adviser to chief executive Dick Costolo.
Amazon Gets Into Music Streaming With Prime Music (GalleyCat)
Watch out Spotify and Pandora, Amazon is getting into the music streaming business. Thursday, the company announced the launch of Prime Music, a new feature that allows Amazon Prime members to stream music for free. Deadline Hollywood Amazon will offer unlimited, ad-free access to streamed tunes to U.S. customers who pay $99 a year for its Prime membership — which also includes no-extra-cost delivery of merchandise and access to its Prime Instant Video service. Mashable Users are able to play any song on demand as many times as desired and download any tracks that are available on the service. The service will start out with more than a million songs, comparable to Pandora’s library but far less than the 20 million Spotify claims. The service launches with iOS and Android applications, desktop options for Macintosh and Windows operating systems and as an automatic update on Kindle Fire devices. Variety Currently, however, Amazon does not have a deal with Universal Music Group for Prime Music. That’s a major omission, given UMG’s 38 percent share of the market with such artists as Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Jay-Z. WSJ Tracks from Warner Music Group and Sony Corp. generally will be more than six months old.
Facebook Hopes to Serve More Relevant Ads to Users, Give Them More Control (AllFacebook)
Many Facebook users will be happy to learn that the social network will soon roll out ad preferences, a tool that explains why specific ads are served to them and allows them to choose which interests should be used in determining the ads they see, as announced by Facebook Thursday. However, some of those users may not be too thrilled with Facebook’s simultaneous announcement that it will also begin factoring in data from websites and applications outside of the social network, although it stressed that users can opt out of this form of ad targeting. NYT Facebook will give its users the ability to see the dossiers of likes and interests it keeps on them, as well as the ability to change, add or delete information in those files. And if you don’t like an ad, you will be able to tell the social network what types of marketing messages you would rather see. Re/code The social network will also start letting advertisers take information about what Facebook’s users do on the site, mix it with data about the stuff they do on other websites and use it to hone their pitch. Facebook calls this “interest-based advertising,” and says that this is common throughout the Web, which is true. It’s also what Facebook said two years ago it wouldn’t do.
The Onion’s ‘ClickHole’ Opens, Prepares to Swallow The Internet (Mashable)
ClickHole, the viral parody site from The Onion, launched on Thursday. The site skewers digital media in much the same way it lampoons traditional print media. It includes all the classic viral media formats — listicles, quizzes and even some “sponsored” content. FishbowlNY Among the many items to enjoy on launch day: a hilarious FAQ, a clever inversion of all those which-character-are-you? quizzes, a run through the prism of Friends and a Mel Brooks-minus-two chairs countdown that nails the inanity of inane BuzzFeed listicles. Kickstarter Creates Journalism Category (GalleyCat)
Crowd-funding site Kickstarter has launched a new category for fundraising: journalism. The site already has 993 projects that fit into the category, ranging from books and photo essays to live tweeting events and digital magazines. Unbeige “We really love the journalism projects we’ve seen already — ProPublica, CIR, Planet Money, The Texas Trib and lots of lone innovators,” a Kickstarter rep said, “and we wanted to give them a proper home, and send the message that we want to see and support more of these.” 10,000 Words Along with the journalism subcategory, The Guardian announced that it will manage its own curated page of projects.
Politico Launches Annual 10-Day Journalism Institute (FishbowlDC)
Politico Thursday announced the launch of its Journalism Institute, a 10-day annual program for college students interested in pursuing a political journalism career in Washington. Bill Nichols will direct the program alongside Kara Kearns, who will assist in its organization. Politico Senior editors and reporters from Politico’s newsroom will work closely with those selected, with curriculum guidance provided by the American University School of Communication and the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education.
Reuters Signs Syndication Deal With Variety (FishbowlNY)
Reuters is teaming up with Variety for all of its entertainment news. Reuters had previously partnered with a few different outlets for syndicated entertainment content. Variety The syndication deal will extend the reach of the publication’s breaking news, feature stories, columns, reviews, analysis, data and original video content to the news service’s broad array of clients around the world. Financial terms of the deal, which encompasses content drawn from both Variety’s magazine and website, were not disclosed.
CNN Crew Injured During Protest Ahead of Opening World Cup Match (TVNewser)
CNN Sao Paulo-based producer Barbara Arvanitidis and correspondent Shasta Darlington were injured Thursday while covering a protest ahead of Thursday’s opening match of the World Cup. Mediaite As the international soccer tournament descends upon the South American country, protestors have hit the streets to decry the expensive, wasteful nature of the FIFA World Cup. During one of the protests, Arvanitidis was reportedly injured by a stun grenade. Meanwhile, the protests have reportedly reached “riot” scale, as tear gas and stun grenades become more prominently used by police forces.

Philadelphia Inquirer Deal Is Finally Done (HuffPost / Reuters)
Philadelphia’s two biggest newspapers were formally sold on Wednesday to a former cable television executive, capping months of power struggles and legal battles complicated by the recent death of one of the owners in an airplane crash. The buyer was H.F. Lenfest, 84, who paid $88 million to buy out other co-owners of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Daily News and their online site, Philly.com, at auction last month.
World Cup Ads Outperform Super Bowl Ads on Social Media (THR)
Data released Thursday by marketing technology company Unruly indicate that the top 20 most shared World Cup commercials have already attracted almost a third more shares than the top 20 Super Bowl 2014 ads. The top 20 World Cup 2014 ads have so far attracted 6.9 million shares across social media — 31.4 percent more than the top 20 ads from Super Bowl 2014 (4.7 million).
