Karen Finney’s Disrupt Cancelled (TVNewser)
Disrupt With Karen Finney won’t be celebrating its one-year birthday this weekend, as the 4 p.m. ET weekend show has been cancelled. FishbowlDC Disrupt debuted June 8, 2013. Finney is the former communications director for the Democratic National Committee and was previously with the NYC Department of Education. Mediaite As of Thursday afternoon, MSNBC’s listed online schedule shows that the 4 p.m. hour will now be filled by documentaries instead of an extension of the network’s news programming. THR / The Live Feed “Our thanks to Karen and her team for their great work. Finney will remain with MSNBC as a contributor,” the network said in a statement. Deadline Hollywood Lousy ratings did in the weekend show, which regularly ranked No. 4 in its time slot among cable networks.

Stephen Colbert Joins Fight Against Amazon (PRNewser)
Amazon has been receiving more than its share of bad publicity over its little war against publisher Hachette — and thanks to Stephen Colbert and author Sherman Alexie, the company got a bit more unflattering attention. GalleyCat Colbert, a Hachette author, criticized the online retailer on his show. He showed off stickers which read, “I Didn’t Buy it on Amazon.” Colbert encouraged viewers to download the stickers from his site and add them to their books. Deadline Hollywood Amazon is in a battle with Hachette and has been accused of refusing orders for upcoming Hachette books, raising prices and deliberately delaying shipments — sometimes by 3-4 weeks. Immediately after the show, Colbert also launched a Twitter war against Bezos and Amazon. WSJ Additionally, Hachette laid off nearly 30 people, or close to 3 percent of its U.S. workforce, on Thursday, blaming a soft market for book sales. The publishing house said the layoffs weren’t directly related to the publisher’s ongoing dispute with Amazon.

Verizon Sends Netflix Cease And Desist Letter Over Error Messages (Reuters)
Verizon Communications Inc. on Thursday demanded that Netflix Inc. immediately stop displaying messages to customers that place blame on Verizon’s broadband service for slow delivery of Netflix TV shows and movies. Variety In Verizon’s letter, its executive vice president Randal Milch writes that “there is no basis for Netflix to assert that issues with respect to playback of any particular video session are attributable solely to the Verizon network.” Netflix’s error message, as identified by Vox Media’s Yuri Victor on Wednesday, reads, “The Verizon network is crowded right now. Adjusting video for smoother playback.” Re/code Netflix’s response, via spokesman Jonathan Friedland: “This is about consumers not getting what they paid for from their broadband provider. We are trying to provide more transparency, just like we do with the ISP Speed Index, and Verizon is trying to shut down that discussion.” CNET Verizon and Netflix have been quibbling over who is to blame for Netflix streaming issues for several months. Verizon and Netflix did manage to sign a commercial arrangement over network interconnection and peering, which the company says it agreed to only in order to improve the streaming service for its customers on the Verizon FiOS network.

In Closing Remarks, Al Jazeera Lawyers Make Global Appeal (Capital New York)
Lawyers for three Al Jazeera journalists who have been detained by the government of Egypt on charges of endangering national security appealed to the case’s global consequences in their closing arguments Thursday. Mediaite Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed were arrested as part of an Egyptian crackdown last summer that included a raiding of Al Jazeera’s offices and harassment of suspected freelancers for supposed collusion with the Muslim Brotherhood. On Thursday, Fahmy, the acting bureau chief for Al Jazeera English, spoke to reporters present in the Cairo courtroom of the inhumane prison conditions and said the government was attempting to criminalize journalism. NYT Later on Thursday, the court adjourned the trial until June 16, when the defense lawyers are scheduled to conclude their closing statements.

Barnes & Noble Teams With Samsung on Co-Branded Tablets (GalleyCat)
Barnes & Noble’s Nook Media has teamed up with Samsung Electronics America to develop a line of co-branded Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook tablets. WSJ The deal fulfills Barnes & Noble’s previously stated plan to reduce its heavy investment in the Nook, which has been a financial drain in recent years, allowing the retailer to focus more on its stores and college business. Under the deal, Barnes & Noble has committed to buying 1 million Samsung co-branded color tablets over the next 15 months, which the retailer will sell in its stores and on its website starting in August. The tablet will be a version of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 4 released in the U.S. on May 1, featuring customized Nook reading and shopping software. Variety Barnes & Noble earlier this year made layoffs in its Nook hardware division, after sales of the tablets declined. The company has faced steep competition from Apple’s iPad, Amazon’s Kindle and other Android-based tablets including those from Samsung.

Dashiell Bennett Named Editor of The Atlantic’s The Wire (FishbowlNY)
Dashiell Bennett has been promoted to editor of The Atlantic’s The Wire, a general news site. Bennett has contributed to the site since 2011, and most recently served as news editor. Capital New York Bennett replaces Gabriel Snyder, who left the company five months ago and now works for Bloomberg Media Group. The appointment will presumably calm some nerves in The Wire’s small newsroom of about a dozen, which has been characterized as being a bit rudderless ever since Snyder’s departure, after which Andrew Golis was named general manager of the site. Poynter / MediaWire Formerly called The Atlantic Wire, which launched in 2003, it rebranded and launched a new responsive website last November.

Paul Carlucci to Retire From News Corp (FishbowlNY)
Paul Carlucci, who served as the New York Post’s publisher from 2005 to 2012, is retiring from News Corp. Carlucci has been with the company for 23 years, most recently serving as chairman and CEO of News America Marketing. New York Post Carlucci will be succeeded as CEO of News America Marketing by Martin J. Garofalo, NAM’s president, News Corp CEO Robert Thomson said in a statement.

Twitter Buys Native Ad Maker Namo Media (Re/code)
Twitter has acquired Namo Media, a startup that’s supposed to help mobile-app makers plug “native” ads into their services. Twitter says it will integrate Namo Media into MoPub, the mobile ad company it bought last fall. GigaOM Namo Media was started in 2013 by a team of former Google employees, and received a $1.9 million seed investment from Andreessen Horowitz, betaworks and Google Ventures, among others.

ABC Studios Taps Fox’s Caitlin Foito as VP, Drama Development (Variety)
Fox’s former director of drama programming Caitlin Foito has joined ABC Studios as vice president of drama development. She will report to senior VP of drama development Nne Ebong. Deadline Hollywood At Fox, she spent three years as director of drama programming, developing such shows as The Following, Almost Human and Rake. Before joining the network in summer 2011, Foito served as director of programming at Fox Television Studios, working on such shows as The Gates for ABC and Lights Out for FX.

BBC Takes Next Step Toward Ultra HD Launch (THR / Behind The Screen)
The BBC has given the strongest indication yet of plans to launch an Ultra HD service by performing a test broadcast of three matches from the FIFA World Cup in 4K resolution. Coverage of the matches, all from Rio’s Maracanã stadia and including the final game on July 13, are being produced and sold by FIFA in the higher resolution format known as Ultra HD, alongside the standard HD coverage.

Time Magazine Teams Up With Quora (SocialTimes)
With Time Inc. set to spin off from Time Warner Friday, Time magazine has announced a new partnership with Quora. The question-and-answer site has been beefing up its media partnerships in an effort to reach a wider audience, including both legacy media brands (like NPR and the BBC), and digital-native brands (like BuzzFeed and The Huffington Post).

Analyst Upgrades BSkyB Stock Despite Questions Over Possible Euro Pay TV Deal (THR)
Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Claudio Aspesi on Thursday upgraded his rating on the stock of U.K. pay TV giant BSkyB to “market perform,” similar to a “neutral,” from “underperform.” While there are open questions surrounding a possible combination of BSkyB with Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland, which would bring together all three European pay TV giants in which Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox has a hand, he argued the stock has dropped to price levels where he had to adjust his stance.

NBC News’ Brian Williams will interview President Barack Obama in Normandy, the network announced Thursday. The interview will take place and air on Friday as world leaders gather to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day. It’s the second big interview for Williams in as many weeks, as he recently traveled to Russia to interview NSA leaker Edward Snowden.

Chicago Cubs Leaving WGN Radio After 90 Years (THR)
The Chicago Cubs are ending their partnership with WGN Radio, one of the longest such relationships in broadcast history. WGN Radio president Jimmy de Castro confirmed Wednesday media reports that the Cubs are leaving the station after this season. The radio station has been the Cubs’ radio home for 90 years. The Cubs announced a long-term broadcast deal with CBS-owned WBBM-AM.

Aereo Is Now Available on Chromecast (Mashable)
Aereo’s streaming TV service is now available on Chromecast. Aereo’s Android app was updated Thursday with Chromecast support. The Chromecast is a $35 dongle that enables users to wirelessly beam content from their computer, smartphone or tablet to their television.
