A former television executive is taking over Freedom Communications Inc., the parent company of the Orange County Register. Mitchell Stern served as chief executive officer for both Fox Television Stations Inc. and DirecTV Inc. He starts as CEO of Freedom on Thursday.
The OC Register reports that Stern doesn’t see the need to make any major cutbacks at the company, which emerged from bankruptcy in May:
“Freedom will be just fine,” he said. “It’s in much better shape than people think.” Both Stern and [board chairman James Dunning Jr.] played down the possibility of any acquisitions in the near term, but said they are looking for alliances that will generate revenues and create value. “There are lots of ways to do expansion,” Stern said. “An out and out acquisition is not likely.” Stern said his emphasis will be on local content and leveraging technology to create a direct relationship with the community. “There is new technology, new ways to reach readers, viewers, advertisers,” Stern said. “We have a lot to do to be innovative.”
