New York Press: Where Are They Now?

As we’ve mentioned before, the new ownership of the New York Press pulled a genius move by hiring David Blum. In just a few weeks, he managed to take a paper that went into a precarious decline over the past few years… and make it good. Seriously. That Deborah Solomon coup was one of the best Hail Mary passes that print journalism has seen in the past few years.

Which got us thinking… What happened to the old-generation New York Press writers we loved? Here’s a short where-are-they-now featuring John Strausbaugh, Jim Knipfel, Matt Taibbi, Judy McGuire, George Tabb, Amy Sohn and more:

John Strausbaugh: Our favorite classic rock-listening editor is writing the TimesWeekend Explorer column and creating video content for the paper (check out his Hell’s Kitchen vidcast).

Jim Knipfel: “Slackjaw” has just written Noogie’s Time to Shine: A True Crime Novel for Virgin Books. According to Time Out New York, it’s “a formidable contribution to loser lit.”

J.T. Leroy: Well, we all know what happened to him.

Taki: The onetime Eurotrash enfant terrible needs to update his website. His American Conservative publication is currently in the hands of Scott McConnell.

Toby Young: A new book on the way, a newfound love of YouTube and a memoir adaptation starring Simon Pegg, Kirsten Dunst, Jeff Bridges and Gillian Anderson? Not too shabby.

Matt Taibbi: Who knows what’s going on with his Rolling Stone column, but a piece he did on Iraq showed up in the last issue of the print edition of Wenner‘s mag and he’s doing some sportswriting as well.

Ned Vizzini: The teenage Stuy wunderkind released a new book last year. Read it. It’s good.

Amy Sohn: Traded in the single girl beat at NYP for the family beat at New York.

Gabriella Gershenson: The longtime food critic is now editor of Time Out New York‘s food section.

Joshua Bernstein: Gershenson’s replacement is eating his way across the mongol Rally. Really.

Jeff Koyen: The provocative newspaper EIC is a regular in the Times travel section.

Judy McGuire: The NYP‘s longtime dating columnist has a new book out and is generally keeping busy.

George Tabb: Tabb, a longtime Tribeca resdient (and hell of a great guy) is suffering from health problems caused by inhaling September 11th’s toxic dust. He has portions of his large intestines removed and needs your help. He has been engaging in activist work and we recommend buying one of his books.

Meanwhile, there are other writers we’ve lost track of or don’t have 100% substantive information on… Does anyone out there have any information on what Andrey Slivka, Tanya Richardson, Alan Cabal or Zach Parsi is up to? Let us know.
