According to the Washington Post, despite recent reports to the contrary, Facebook has no plans to lift its 5000 friend limit.

Although Facebook doesn't want to dictate rules of friending behavior to its users, the company is explicit in stating that the purpose of maintaining a list is not to see whose friend belt has the most notches.
