Newspaper Baron No Longer Such an Appealing Job Description
Hey, have you always dreamed of being a media mogul? Maybe you watched Citizen Kane more than the average kid? Well now’s your chance. According to the Times the future of media is so dim that companies can’t give away their newspaper assets, not even papers that boast “storied names, and stars like Roger Ebert and Robert Novak.” Granted, perhaps not the best example, but you get the picture. The problem, or really, one of the many, many problems (most of which you hear about in this space on a daily basis) is people fear this is less a downturn in the newspaper business, than a a total stop.
Experts say the lack of interest reflects a sharp shift in the last year toward a more pessimistic long-term view of the industry. The loss of ads has accelerated, and few expect a rebound even when the economy recovers. So basically, we may be looking at a future where newspapers take over, say, antique cars as the rich man’s hobby of choice
