Area Satire Newspaper's Redesign Looks More Badger Herald Than USA Today
NEW YORK A popular local satire newspaper felt the need to redesign this week, adding to the media gossip about a potential sale to Viacom, authorities here say. "I love the Onion," FishbowlNY editor Dylan Stableford said. "Hell, I'd buy it if I had Viacom money. I'd also buy Miami." The self-proclaimed "America's Finest News Source" now looks more like the University of Wisconsin-Badger Herald than the USA Today. The paper added a much-needed satirical sports section, expanded earnest cultural listings (food), a celebrity column ("The Hater") and funny pages, as well as the Tolerability Index, the Onion's answer to New York magazine's popular Approval Matrix. "It is with great sadness that I offer the following concessions to you miserable lot in order to enhance readership and revenue streams," Onion VP of client services "H. Cuthbert Zweibel" said in a statement. "For the marginally literate, there will be more comic strips, numbers puzzles from the Far East and like time-wasters ... all of this appears in a beautiful new design, which will be pleasing to the eye and draw more attention to the advertisers."
