Newsweek Shakeup

Mark Whitaker, editor of the No. 2 news magazine since 1998, will move upstairs and hand the reins to Jon Meacham, currently the managing editor.

That will put Meacham in charge of day-to-day operations. Not clear is exactly what role Whitaker will play. But he is expected to stay with Newsweek, possibly working on some broader strategic job with the magazine and its parent, the Washington Post Company, which also owns Slate and Budget Travel.
