This Nieman Fellow Also Learned How to Play Poker

TammerlinDrummondTwitterPicOakland Tribune columnist Tammerlin Drummond (pictured) is back on the beat after a stint at Harvard as a 2013-14 Nieman Fellow. Although her area of focus was very serious, she has also in a summary of her leave of absence managed to touch on the lighter side of the experience.

To wit, here are a pair of bullet points from Drummond’s return-column:

A Harvard Law School professor taught me to play poker as a way of learning strategic thinking.

I gave Sanghar Rahimi, a fellow Nieman, his first-ever ride in a car with a woman behind the wheel. Sanghar survived covering the war in Afghanistan for the New York Times, and I’m happy to report he also survived my driving.

We look forward to reading how Drummond applies, to her future Tribune Tuesday and Sunday columns, the knowledge she gained about effective solutions for gun violence.
