NY Times Makes Three Promotions

The New York Times has promoted both Janet Elder and Larry Ingrassia to deputy managing editor, and Rebecca Corbett to assistant managing editor.

See below for the memo from Jill Abramson, the Times’ executive editor, announcing the changes.

Dear Colleagues,

Janet Elder and Larry Ingrassia have seen their roles on the masthead increased dramatically by the planning, management and budgeting of our many new digital initiatives. Along with Tom Bodkin, much of their time is devoted to partnering with our business side colleagues on the execution of our new initiatives, from international to video. In light of their expanded responsibilities and because they are instrumental advisers to me and Dean in planning and staffing for our future they become deputy managing editors effective immediately.

In their time on the masthead, each has already left a mark. Janet has been the steward of the newsroom’s budget, a liaison with our colleagues on the business side and an important adviser on personnel and news. Larry has led the seamless integration of The Times newsroom and that of The International New York Times and overseen the launch of our new product initiatives. In his new role, Larry will be the point person from the newsroom in working with the business side on digital products and initiatives.

Rebecca Corbett, who has settled into a crucial role planning and executing enterprise journalism, successfully splitting her time between Washington and New York, becomes an assistant managing editor. Rebecca has edited some of our hardest hitting stories, including reports on the N.S.A. and some of our most elegant narratives. Rebecca’s role deepens Dean and my commitment to providing the best of long-form journalism at The Times. Matt Purdy and Rebecca are the best in the business and with both of them as assistant managing editors I am confident we will dominate the field. This appointment also takes effect immediately.

Fondly,
Jill
