NYT Co. Seeking ‘Deep Concessions,’ Boston in ‘Near Shock’

13globe01-190.jpgThe showdown between the New York Times Co. and Boston Globe continues (does the curse of the Bambino extend to newspapers?).

The Boston Globe is reporting that the NYT Co., which has threatened to shut down the paper altogether if it doesn’t meet their demands, is “seeking deep concessions from the newspaper’s union mailers that would account for more than 40 percent of their wages and benefits.”

Meanwhile! An article in today’s NYT says Boston is in state of “near shock” over the thought of losing the paper.

Civic leaders and ordinary Bostonians alike — particularly those old enough to remember a pre-Internet age, before free access to news on the Web siphoned away so many of the paper’s readers — have spoken out about the central role of The Globe in the life of a region that cares deeply about local culture and local politics and fashions itself as the higher education capital of the nation.
