Adventures in celebrity journalism; or, if no one ever returns your calls does it count as journalism?

Brangelus.jpg Every so often here at FishbowlNY we traffic in juicy, wanton speculation, which we know Howard Kurtz just loves. Has Rehnquist retired yet, that big ol' kidder? Is the White House going to stand by the September 29, 2003 assertion that anyone involved with the Plame leak would get fired? Does Anderson Cooper know that I'm there for him, truly, if he ever needs me? Most of the time we can find guidance by plundering other sources, but we recently learned that when you really need answers you should definitely go to celebrity gatekeepers, who are sure to be as helpful as can be.

Witness this exchange with the helpful sweetie in the office of Geyer Kosinski, manager to the lovely and adoptalicious Angelina Jolie. We had a question for him about his Oscar-winning client, of whom we aren't jealous at all, why would you say that? We sent a polite email detailing our questions, outlining the nascent item politely and following up with a phone call. The person on the other end told us that our email had been received and that we would be "looked after." Which, you know, sounded pretty good. But 24 hours later, and no call. So, confident in the fact that everyone in Hollywood must read Fishbowl religiously, we called back, and spoke with someone who was presumably an assistant, whom we shall call "Snip" for no real reason. Here is the transcript, accurate insofar as our Diet Coke-addled memory permits:

SNIP: Geyer Kosinski's office.

FISHBOWL: Hi, it's Fishbowl at Mediabistro calling to follow up on the email I sent. We spoke yesterday.

SNIP: Yes, your email has been received and we will review it and see if we are interested.

FISHBOWL (confused): Wait, no - I'm seeking comment on an item. I'm looking to publish it as soon as possible. When can I expect to hear from you?

SNIP: I really can't say, but it's been received and we'll review it.

FISHBOWL: Well, at some point I'm going to have to publish this. Should I just say "no comment"?

SNIP (snippily): No, I didn't say that. It's been received and it hasn't been reviewed.

FISHBOWL: Well, can I -- could I get your name, please?

SNIP: No.

FISHBOWL: No. Right. Okay. Well, can you give me a sense of when you're going to review it because I plan to publish this soon.

SNIP: You do what you have to do. [Click.]

So, we did what we had to do, which was nickname him "Snip" in a public forum and ruin our chances of ever eating lunch in that town again. Which is fine, because we rather prefer eating lunch in this town.

Update: They didn't call Lowdown back, either. We don't feel so bad. We can have lunch with them. Lloyd, you're buying.
