"No one wants to get to the bottom of this more than the President of the United States"

Scott McClellan said that several times during yesterday's press briefing, along with "I'm not going to comment on an ongoing investigation" and "Did I mention that I'm not going to comment on an ongoing investigation?"

President Bush, meanwhile, has demonstrated his deep desire to get to the bottom of this by clearing brush at his Crawford ranch not commenting.

Today, McClellan faces the press again (our boy at FishbowlDC is live from the scene and says the anticipation is palbable).

Now that McClellan has had a day to mull it over/be programmed accordingly, perhaps we will get answers to these unanswered questions from yesterday:

  • "Does the president stand by his pledge to fire anyone involved in a leak of the name of a CIA operative?"

  • "Do you stand by your statement from the fall of 2003, when you were asked specifically about Karl and Elliot Abrams and Scooter Libby, and you said, 'I've gone to each of those gentlemen, and they have told me they are not involved in this'?"

  • "When did you change your mind to say that it was OK to comment during the course of an investigation before, but now it’s not?"

  • "Does the president continue to have confidence in Mr. Rove?"

  • "Has there been any change, or is there a plan for Mr. Rove's portfolio to be altered in any way?"

    Just asking.

Per The Note, delineating the difference between a criminal offense and a and political one: "It is unseemly for the president's senior adviser, using inside information, to discredit enemies of the president anonymously." (NB They've got a lot more at The Note - thoughtful analysis and deep background. Recommended reading.)
