Dismissed UK Journalist’s Orwell Musical Coming to New York

British journalist Peter Cordwell, who was rudely dumped this past summer by a weekly publication, has never been to Manhattan. But by the time his 67th birthday rolls around, he will have finally made the pilgrimage.

Per a report on, Cordwell’s musical One George Orwell will be staged for five nights next September at the Lower East Side’s Teatro Latea. Written with musician Carl Picton, the musical features eight original songs:

“I always wanted to go to New York – I’m a big Bob Dylan fan and loved JD Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye – and there’s no better way of doing it than this,” said Cordwell…

“We’re not sure how New York audiences will respond to it, positively I hope. We might add a line here or there to relate to America, maybe something Dylanesque to hark back to the protest movement of the Sixties.”

The play debuted in 2012 and was staged again earlier this year to coincide with Orwell’s 110th birthday. Teatro Latea became interested after Cordwell sent them audio and videotapes of his production.

From a review by a fellow Orwell Society member:

The play explores Orwell’s life (Southwold Walk) and his concerns for the world that he lived in, for the Britain that he loved. It touches on Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, of course, but also P.G. Wodehouse, whose humor is deliciously reflected alongside the Marx brothers, and Coming Up for Air, the novel which best describes the Henley area where Orwell grew up.
