NFL Network anchor Rich Eisen and radio host Dan Patrick were recently runners-up at the Sports Emmys to perennial winner Bob Costas. But that still leaves the business of ceremonial first-pitch bragging rights.
On Sunday, before the Dodgers game against the Cardinals, Eisen threw out a wide-right ceremonial first ball. But it’s what PA announcer Erick Smith said that is garnering attention this morning: “A better pitch than Dan Patrick… Let’s hear it for Rich Eisen.”
This was definitely a ceremonial pitch with more build-up than usual. Even the Dodgers got into the act, tweeting a Vine video immediately afterwards to @dpshow. Last week on Patrick’s program, his former ESPN Sports Center desk mate insisted he would crack the 50 mph barrier on Sunday. At press time, that claim is still being verified by Patrick’s staff.
Update – 05/28/13: It’s a Memorial Day weekend gift that just keeps on giving. Eisen denied on the show this morning that he fed Smith the Patrick line and the Danettes have followed with some separately damning I-Team investigating.
