Colleagues Mourn the Passing of Window & Door Editor

JohnSwansonPicWhen Fenestration, the first North American magazine targeted at the residential window and door market, was launched in 1987, John Swanson was at the helm. In 1999, he moved over to the National Glass Association and for 14 years preceding his death from cancer at age 52 over the weekend, oversaw the trade group’s magazine Window & Door as editor and, eventually, associate publisher.

On a memorial page set up today for Swanson, comments have begun pouring in. Here’s just one:

Mike Reier: Having the pleasure to work with John over the last 13 years has been very special and rewarding. There was a quality that he possessed that was one of giving and a quiet demeanor that was always present. As I was beginning to work in this industry John had been the recipient of my too numerous questions, only to say “that’s not problem” and would contribute a profound opinion.

Professionally, he was the gentle giant for his editorial and technical expertise. The unassuming and reserved attitude that he conveyed with all personal and business dealings was always a breath of fresh air. The contributions that John made to the fenestration industry will undoubtedly be the reasons for future growth of many new ventures. Here’s to the “Wild Turkey” man for being part of my life and making a difference, he will certainly be missed.

Per the obituary, Swanson continued to contribute to the trade magazine last year while battling throat cancer. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. February 1 at  Grace Church (802 Broadway at 10th Street). RIP.
