Roger Black on Neal Boulton

black.jpgRoger Black on Michael Wolff’s 1999 profile and Neal Boulton:

“There’s a Principessa in Rome, but in Milan it’s the Principe. In Paris I like the Meurice, not the Ritz. Michael Wolff is always fun to read, but it’s risky to quote him without a fact-checker.

The reason I go to these places is to be with clients. By working on a lot of different publications, you get more experience. That’s what the clients are paying for, not to be ‘a champion of today’s tends.’

And that’s why I am not worried by Neal Bolton’s steroidal attack. In the interview I freely admitted that the latest Men’s Fitness is doing better commercially than the one I worked on. I just regret that they didn’t give my design a fair try.

But, hey, I’d rather be a beautiful failure than a hideous success.
