Santa Monica Mirror Welcomes New Editor-in-Chief

An Aussie, by way of Beverly Hills. That’s the basic logline for new Santa Monica Mirror editor-in-chief Brenton Garen (pictured).

Garen came to LA around Christmas 2008, initially freelancing for Down Under networks Seven and Nine Network Australia, then joining the Beverly Hills Courier full-time at the beginning of 2010. During his school years, he learned the real-world journalistic ropes by toiling at the Queensland Times and Ipswich Advertiser. From today’s announcement:

In July, www.smmirror.com recorded 65,000 visitors with a total of 180,000 pages on the website. This is a 13 percent increase in traffic since January 2011… Garen helped grow The Courier’s website traffic significantly during his tenure while he also wrote, edited, and designed the weekly print edition.

Congrats to this fast-rising Aussie as well as to outgoing Mirror editor-in-chief Chris Rosacker, who started Monday at Grass Valley, CA community newspaper The Union. (And Kurt Orzek, editor of Santa Monica Patch, say hello to your new competition.)
