Star Trek Mating Ritual Reference Garners ‘Dilbert’ Some 21st Century Attention

Funny. We here at Fishbowl LA love reading comic strips, but we hadn’t even considered Dilbert since…oh…1999. I mean, tough to empathize with the burdens of cubicle life when half the country is unemployed. Anyway, it would be easy to assume, as we did, that Dilbert was done for–in terms of his cultural relevance anyway.

Nope. In the post-Twitter world all it takes is an obscure Star Trek-mating-ritual reference to garner some heat again.

Get it? Neither did we. The answer comes courtesy of Zap2it.

“Pon Farr is a psychophysical condition wherein Vulcans go into heat every seven years. It is accompanied by a blood fever and, if the Vulcans cannot find someone to mate with whom they are empathically bonded, the Vulcans become violent and eventually die.”

Kind of funny. But to the nerds who lord over the Interwebz, this is comedy gold. The strip is blowing up on Twitter and in the blogosphere.

Good for Scott Adams. According his blog, the guy is apparently just figuring out yoga and DVD players. Not exactly on the forefront of contemporary culture.

Mine those obscure 20th-century pop culture references Scotty. How about trying the unicorn apology scene in Legend? That’s a good one.
