Strike Watch: WGA Pickets Head To Viacom

We are entering the tenth week of the Writers Guild of America’s strike against the studios. For the third time since the WGA strike began, picketers will be heading to the Viacom building at 1515 Broadway this Wednesday, January 9th. WGA East President Michael Winship will be at the picket to talk with the striking writers. The rally, which is described in the press release as ”the first large-scale rally of 2008 in New York City” will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In other strike news, Brooks Barnes and Michael Cieply of The New York Times note that a rumored deal with Tom Cruise’s United Artists production company ”may have opened the door to a full-blown brawl, as other producers demanded to know why writers have granted some companies a special agreement but not others.”

The WGA and David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants production companyhave reached a deal reached a deal independent of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Worldwide Pants competitors the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel Live — who will appear on each others’ show in a cross-network swap — have returned without their writers. Leno, in particular, has taken fire from the guild for writing his own monologues.

And The New York Post reports today that The Weinstein Company ”is said to be waiting for Tom Cruise’s United Artists to announce a similar interim pact with union leaders before it agrees to do the same.”
