A.J. Daulerio Steps Aside as Editor of Gawker, John Cook Takes Over

The A.J. Daulerio Gawker era is coming to a close. According to New York’s Daily Intelligencer, Daulerio is stepping down as editor-in-chief of Gawker, and John Cook is succeeding him.

“John Cook is the most experienced reporter on the team, a surprisingly powerful opinion writer and a gossip of the most refined kind,” wrote Nick Denton, in a memo. “He has natural authority. John will preserve the crew and build on the success of 2012. I’m grateful to AJ for leaving Gawker in such great shape and I can’t wait to see what John and his colleagues will do in 2013. Roger Ailes’ excitement may be more muted.”

For the full Denton memo and Daulerio’s note to staffers, head over to Daily Intelligencer.

Gawker’s New Commenting System Has Some Writers Worried

It seems like at least once per month we’re writing about Gawker Media’s commenters or its commenting systems. The latest development is something concerning the latter. As The New York Observer notes, Gawker Media is rolling out a new form for commenting, called “Kinja.”

If Kinja works right, it will make writers secondary:

Bloggers trained to fear, ignore or disdain the commenters now have a mandate to engage with them, a job that is equal parts forum moderator, lifeguard and whipping boy. Or become obsolete.

Asked if Kinja, in its fully realized form, even required writers, Mr. [Nick] Denton replied, ‘As long as readers want to see discussions in which our staff writers participate, we’ll have staff writers.”

Not especially reassuring news for his editorial employees, who are fretting that those who fail to adapt will be fired.

Gawker Media has added two staffers. A.J.
Gawker Writer Fired After Using N-Word in Post

Well that was quick. The New York Observer is reporting that Seth Abramovitch, the Gawker writer who somehow thought using the n-word in a post about Kanye West was funny, has been fired.

A.J. Daulerio, Gawker’s Editor-in-Chief, confirmed that Abramovitch was released, but didn’t elaborate on why he was let go. We could probably guess what that reason was.

A.J. Daulerio Named EIC of Gawker, Tommy Craggs EIC of Deadspin

Nick Denton just tweeted some big news: A.J. Daulerio has been named the Editor-in-Chief of Gawker, and Tommy Craggs will be succeeding Daulerio as Editor-in-Chief of Deadspin. There is no word as of now what the future holds for Remy Stern, the current Editor-in-Chief of Gawker.

We’ve reached out to Denton, Daulerio and Stern for comment. We’ll update as we learn more.

UPDATE:
According to the New York Times, Denton said that Stern will remain at Gawker Media as a consultant, and Daulerio was moved to Gawker to help grow the site. “We need to release the full potential of the site’s excellent roster of writers — and fill out the team with new hires,” wrote Denton in an internal memo. “A.J. has proven himself as both developer and recruiter of editorial talent. That’s what the site needs right now. Hence the switch.”

UPDATE TWO:
Stern emailed us the following statement:

continued…

Tom Scocca Leaves Slate for Deadspin

It’s hard to imagine Deadspin with more of an edge, but if anyone can bring it, it’s Slate’s Tom Scocca. A.J. Daulerio, Deadspin’s Editor-in-Chief, announced yesterday evening that Scocca will be joining the sports site as Managing Editor.

Scocca then followed that announcement up with a final post to his Slate blog:

When I got up this morning, or even when I had lunch, I didn’t really know I’d be shutting the blog down today, on the 698th post (Go for 700, already, cries the part of the brain conditioned to tend the Tamagotchi). That’s how the instant horizon works. Get mad about Bill Simmons’ taste in shoes and—oh, time to make an announcement: I’m going to be managing editor of Deadspin.

Gabriel Sherman to Write Book on Fox News

FishbowlNY is sure the picture on the right is sending chills up and down your spine, but we only posted it for a good reason: One of our favorite writers, Gabriel Sherman, just announced that he’s signed a deal with Random House to write a book about Fox News.

Sherman spoke to us last month about his profile on A.J. Daulerio, and we’ve always enjoyed his pieces in New York, so if you see him today, give him some dap and congratulate him. Unless you don’t know him personally, then maybe just tell him “congrats.” Actually, if you don’t know him, maybe just think “congrats” and keep walking, no need to be creepy.

Gabriel Sherman Discusses His Profile of Deadspin’s A.J. Daulerio

In the February issue of GQ, Gabriel Sherman profiles A.J. Daulerio, the Editor-in-Chief at Deadspin.com. We thought a blogger getting attention that is usually reserved for high-profile celebrities was noteworthy (editors note: Playgirl if you’re looking for someone to profile, I’m available), especially considering Daulerio’s irreverent style. We reached out to Sherman for his take on the piece, and he took the time to answer a few questions.

FBNY: GQ typically features celebrities – or at least people everyone knows about – but most people don’t know Daulerio. Do you think the decision to profile him means bloggers are becoming celebrities in their own right?

Sherman: I think the notion of someone being defined as a “blogger” is outdated. Blogs, such that they even exist anymore, are just a platform. The Internet has collapsed all forms of media into what we now call ‘content.’ A blog post competes for reader attention with television and 5,000-word magazine pieces and daily newspaper articles. Daulerio made for a fascinating profile subject because he’s had a major impact on two interconnected worlds: sports and media. That he happens to publish his content in blog form isn’t really central to what makes him a a compelling figure. Daulerio’s fearlessness, and controversial approach to reporting, are what make him interesting. It’s not about bloggers becoming celebrities per se. The question is really about someone having impact and driving a conversation, which A.J. has managed to do in a significant way, even if it means foisting penis photos on the rest of us.

GQ Talks to The Man Behind Deadspin

A.J. Daulerio is the Editor-in-Chief of Deadspin.com, and if you’re looking for someone to blame because you now know that Brett Favre takes pictures of his own penis, he’s your man. In a GQ profile, Gabriel Sherman talks to Daulerio about what his reporting style has done for Deadspin (good things), journalism (not always good things) and Daulerio himself (mostly bad things).

It’s a great read, and sort of surprising to see in GQ. Typically, the magazine profiles people that everyone knows, but Daulerio doesn’t fall into that category. Though maybe after today he will.

Also, keep an eye out tomorrow for our interview with Sherman, where we’ll get his perspective on Daulerio and his effect on journalism.
