Kidnapped Journalist, Apparently Executed by ISIS (NBC News)
The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) claims to have beheaded an American photojournalist and has threatened the life of another American journalist if President Obama doesn’t stop airstrikes in Iraq. TVNewser In a gruesome video, James Wright Foley, a freelance journalist for Global Post, is apparently beheaded by ISIS militants. The militants claim they are also holding journalist Steven Soltoff. HuffPost The YouTube video and photos purportedly of Foley emerged on Tuesday. Titled “A Message to #America (from the #IslamicState),” the video identified a man on his knees as “James Wright Foley” and showed his beheading. “This is James Wright Foley, an American citizen of your country,” an Islamic State militant says in the video, which has since been removed by YouTube. “As a government, you have been at the forefront of the aggression towards the Islamic State. You have plotted against us and have gone far out of your way to find reasons to interfere in our affairs. Today, your military air force is attacking us daily in Iraq, your strikes have caused casualties among Muslims.” Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Foley disappeared in northwest Syria on November 22, 2012. The White House said they have not yet confirmed the authenticity of the video. NYT In Washington, a National Security Council spokeswoman, Caitlin Hayden, said in a statement: “We have seen a video that purports to be the murder of U.S. citizen James Foley by ISIL. The intelligence community is working as quickly as possible to determine its authenticity. If genuine, we are appalled by the brutal murder of an innocent American journalist,” she said, using an alternative name for ISIS.

Al Gore Sues Al Jazeera Over $500 Million Current TV Deal (Bloomberg)
Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore has sued Al Jazeera, claiming the satellite news provider owned by the Qatari royal family owes him and a partner $65 million from a deal to buy his network, Current TV. TVNewser “Our outside counsel is reviewing the complaint,” an Al Jazeera spokesperson said. “We think it relates to a commercial dispute between former shareholders of Current Media and Al Jazeera America. We may have further comment once they’ve fully reviewed everything.” Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Gore and business partner Joel Hyatt, the co-founders of Current Media, say that Al Jazeera has unlawfully refused to turn over tens of millions of dollars currently located in an escrow account. That money is owed to Current Media shareholders per the terms of the $500-million merger agreement made in January 2013, the plaintiffs say. New York Post Gore, 66, was set to personally pocket an estimated $100 million on the sale of his 20 percent stake in the network, which he helped found in 2004. Mediaite In a statement, Gore’s lawyer said, “Al Jazeera America wants to give itself a discount on the purchase price that was agreed to nearly two years ago. We are asking the court to order Al Jazeera America to stop wrongfully withholding the escrow funds that belong to Current’s former shareholders.” It should be noted that last year, Gore himself was sued for the sale of Current TV.

Report: Al Jazeera Finalizing Deal to Acquire Current TV

A few months ago, Michael Wolff wondered in the pages of USA TODAY - “Who Will Buy Al Gore’s Current TV?” He concluded that an Internet behemoth like The Huffington Post, Buzzfeed or even College Humor might make sense.

But according to a report this afternoon by New York Times media columnist Brian Stelter, the most interested party has turned out to be from far beyond our country’s borders, Web or otherwise:

Rather than simply use Current to distribute its English-language channel, called Al Jazeera English and based in Doha, Qatar, Al Jazeera will create a new channel based in New York, according to people with knowledge of the deal negotiations. The channel may be called Al Jazeera America. Roughly 60 percent of the programming will be produced in the United States, while the remaining 40 percent will come from Al Jazeera English.

John Fugelsang Gets a Current TV Show

FishbowlLA was lucky enough to be at the Pantages this past weekend for the LA stop of Stephanie Miller’s “Sexy Liberal Comedy Tour.” Although she and radio compadre Hal Sparks were both excellent, the guy who really stole the show was another one of her radio-TV regulars, John Fugelsang.

Right on cue, Fugelsang announced this morning on Miller’s program broadcast live from the TCA that he is getting his own Current TV series in the fall, joining Miller, whose three-hour daily syndicated radio offering is now being broadcast. For the handsome young comedian and new father, this is a natural progression at the network, where he has appeared as a commentator and guest hosted for network personalities such as Eliot Spitzer and Jennifer Granholm.

From this morning’s accompanying release:

“We at Current are eager to bring John’s unique perspective on politics and the world around him to primetime,” commented Current TV chairman Al Gore. “He’s been a part of the Current family for a while now and we see just how much his voice resonates with our audience. His new show will nicely complement our growing lineup.”

Report: TheWrap, Penske and Ron Burkle in Hunt for Variety

Ever since Daniel Frankel at PaidContent revealed that 11 entities were interested in looking at the Variety books, the race has been on among media watchers to identify authoritatively who those parties might be.

The New York Post today seems to have claimed these honors. Per a Page Six report:

Billionaire Ron Burkle is looking to further extend his influence in Hollywood by buying entertainment trade paper Variety, sources tell Page Six. Taking over Variety would continue supermarket magnate Burkle’s buying spree, which this year alone includes investments in industry hangout Soho House, BlackBook Media, Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity Media, concert-booking firm Artist Group International and UK agent Duncan Heath’s Independent Talent Group. He’s also an investor in numerous Harvey Weinstein films and Al Gore’s Current TV.

FishbowlLA Set Visit: The Young Turks

Watching yesterday from the second floor Culver City control room as The Young Turks’ tireless host Cenk Uygur conducted a split-screen interview about – what else – contentious DC politics, FishbowlLA marveled at the talent everyone there talks about. His ability to do an entire, fast-paced current affairs program without benefit of a teleprompter.

“I’ve worked over the years with Matt Lauer, Katie Couric, Chris Matthews…” raved senior producer Roland Woerner. “I’ve never seen anyone with the ability to do a program like this without a teleprompter.”

The same goes for Uygur’s control-room brain trust. When a host and program run off a teleprompter, all sorts of cues can be “tagged in,” to help coordinate when to throw to a graphic, guest, specific camera shot and so on. With Uygur, there is no such safety net; the resulting flow, presided over with a masterful, arms-wide touch by director Genji Keen, is infectious. TYT’s ultra-modern and even-tempered operation is the kind of 21st century outlet many unemployed journalists would kill to be able to work for.

Dorothy Lucey Makes a Left Turn to… Current TV!?

Although recently departed Good Day LA co-host Dorothy Lucey is a “self-professed political junkie,” it’s safe to say Al Gore’s Current TV was very low on the over-under list of places she would wind up next.

In what FishbowlLA applauds as a brilliant example of mixing it up, Lucey will co-host tonight’s edition of The Young Turks with Cenk Uygur. We’ll be sure to update this item later with a link or embed of the video.

What to expect? A TYT rep tells us:

“The big news of the day is Obama’s deportation policy change. They’re going to break down the genius of his political move and Dorothy will join in on the discussion. They’re also doing a segment about the “Checks and the City” controversy – last night Sarah Jessica Parker hosted a big fundraiser at her home in NYC and the Republicans went nuts about it. Dorothy will speak to Hollywood’s involvement in the presidential campaign race. Also, they will be discussing drone attacks, and Rolling Stone contributor Michael Hastings will be on for that part.”

Gavin Newsom Gets a Current TV Show

Here is a move that could offer tangible dividends for Al Gore and Joel Hyatt’s fledgling cable TV channel. Starting next month, former San Francisco mayor and current California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom will be hitting the Current TV airwaves as host of a weekly talk program, The Gavin Newsom Show.

That’s Newsom, above, recently appearing on another new Current TV show, The War Room with Jennifer Granholm. FishbowlLA likes the look and sound of this guy as a TV host for a by-the-Bay based outlet.

Keith Olbermann Is Out at Current TV

Current TV publicly parted ways with its cantankerous star Keith Olbermann today. Current founders Al Gore and Joel Hyatt broke the news in an open letter on Current’s blog.

We created Current to give voice to those Americans who refuse to rely on corporate-controlled media and are seeking an authentic progressive outlet.  We are more committed to those goals today than ever before.

Current was also founded on the values of respect, openness, collegiality, and loyalty to our viewers. Unfortunately these values are no longer reflected in our relationship with Keith Olbermann and we have ended it.

We are moving ahead by honoring Current’s values. Current has a fundamental obligation to deliver news programming with a progressive perspective that our viewers can count on being available daily — especially now, during the presidential election campaign. Current exists because our audience desires the kind of perspective, insight and commentary that is not easily found elsewhere in this time of big media consolidation.

Olbermann has yet to respond to the news. He did, however, promise a Twitter statement in the near future.

Current TV Makes Good on Third Show Promise

A few weeks ago, when Current TV chairman Al Gore welcomed Cenk Uygur to the ranks, he promised that the San Francisco based network would soon be announcing a third show to go along with The Young Turks and Keith Olbermann. This week, he revealed the latest piece of his dynamically evolving 2011 prime time puzzle to be The War Room with Jennifer Granholm.

Granholm (pictured) was the first woman to hold the office of governor in the state of Michigan. The two-term ex-politician joins a progressive network that not only espouses a lot of the same views as Michael Moore, but sometimes also welcomes him as a guest. That trend will surely continue on War Room. Per Tuesday’s release:

Granholm, a regular contributor to NBC’s Meet the Press, recently co-authored a new book, A Governor’s Story: The Fight for Jobs and America’s Economic Future, with her husband and leadership consultant, Daniel G. Mulhern.
