NY1 Anchor Pat Kiernan Plays Panelist on CNN

CNN viewers who were waiting for the “cruise from hell” to dock in Mobile, Alabama last night were greeted by NY1 morning anchor Pat Kiernan.

Kiernan joined a group appearing on Piers Morgan Tonight with former CNBC host Donny Deutsch substituting.

This was not his first time on the cable news network. From 2000 to 2004, Kiernan anchored a business program on the now-defunct CNNfn. That broadcast led to assignments on the “main stage” as well.

In addition, Kiernan occasionally is reunited with his former CNNfn colleagues Ali Velshi and Christine Romans on CNN’s weekend programming.

Morning Media Menu Welcomes Back CNN’s Ali Velshi

CNN’s chief business correspondent (and fellow Canadian…Steve is surrounded!) Ali Velshi joined us again on today’s podcast. The last time we spoke to Velshi was the morning after the President’s Not State of the Union speech. This morning he weighs in the the coverage of the Obama’s trip to Europe saying that, unlike Tucker Carlson, he did not necessarily find it fawning: “I think the coverage reflected the fact we weren’t sure what was going to happen…I think it can be fawning and accurate at the same time.”

Today on the Menu we welcome CNN’s chief business correspondent, and author of “Gimme My Money Back,” Ali Velshi to discuss his reaction to last night’s Not State of the Union address:

“There was some sense of moving the focus away from the immediate…which is bad markets, unemployment, and bad housing to things that are a few years in the future, and I thought was a good plan, it sort of instilled some hope. But there was still a great lack of specificity about the thing that we’re most concerned about right now, which is a plan for the second half of the TARP money, the $350 million to the banks. I was a little surprised he didn’t mention that.”

Velshi goes on to detail the major reasons why (phew) this recession is not as bad as the Great Depression. He also says that he really didn’t think Rick Santelli‘s outburst the other day “was a rant at all…I think Rick Santelli expresses opinion in a strong fashion every day.” And of course we address the eternal question of paid content. For a couple hours, the back room at Michael’s was transformed into a television news executive bender, a happy hour in honor of our outgoing TVNewser, Brian Stelter [right], and incoming TVNewser, er, ‘Newsers: Chris Ariens, Diane Clehane, Alissa Kinsky and Philadelphia Inquirer TV columnist and Katie Couric nemesis Gail Shister.
