Alison Brower Rejoins The Hollywood Reporter

When Hearst Magazines stated earlier today that exiting EIC Alison Brower was departing for California, they left out one crucial detail. She is headed there so she can work once again for The Hollywood Reporter.

I am thrilled to announce the return of the wonderful Alison Brower to The Hollywood Reporter as deputy editorial director. Alison comes back to us from Hearst, where she served as editor-in-chief of Dr. Oz’s enormously successful lifestyle publication, Dr. Oz The Good Life. The first issue of Dr. Oz The Good Life sold out on newsstands and had to go back to press for reprint. Today, thanks to Alison’s impressive work, the magazine was announced as an official launch.

Prior to her work with Dr. Oz, Alison was special projects editor at The Hollywood Reporter, where she managed and edited feature packages, including the Cannes issue (one of our ASME-nominated issues of 2013) and Comedy issue. Alison also conceived and developed related web and video content for THR. Prior to her tenure at THR, Alison was the interim editor-in-chief of Seventeen.

Redbook EIC Moves Over to Dr. Oz The Good Life

JillHerzigPicAlison Brower‘s decision to leave the Hearst fold and return to California is good news for Jill Herzig (pictured). Ahead of the full launch of Dr. Oz The Good Life this summer with the arrival of the August/September issue, she has been tapped to replace Brower as editor-in-chief.

From today’s announcement:

Herzig had been editor-in-chief of Redbook since 2010, where she introduced a new look and concept focusing on fun, affordable fashion, beauty and style. Prior to Redbook, Herzig was executive editor of Glamour, and previously, she served as special projects director of Self and executive editor of New Woman. Herzig started her career in women’s magazines at Cosmopolitan under Helen Gurley Brown.

Exclusive! The First Interview with Dr. Oz on His New Hearst Title

LunchAtMichaelsWe understand that the deadline for Oscar voters to send in their ballots is today, but we’re still more than a little miffed that we missed seeing Leonardo DiCaprio, Bruce Dern and Richard Gere by a day. A little birdie told us Paramount threw a schmoozefest in the middle of Michael’s dining room yesterday to drum up some Academy love for its pictures — the overly long and ridiculously profane The Wolf of Wall Street and the absolutely brilliant Nebraska. Having a slew of Tinseltown A-listers in their midst gave the regular folks (it’s a relative term, I know) a chance to do some serious stargazing. “It was a bit surreal,” one diner told me. It seems only fitting to us that Hollywood took over the dining room on a day when the rest of Manhattan was in a deep freeze straight out of a disaster movie. The Day After Tomorrow, anyone?

Well, it is Wednesday, after all, and we wanted to start our new year of celebrity confabs off on the right foot so who better to whip us into shape than none other than Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Emmy-Award winning daytime television host, author of seven New York Times Bestsellers and dispenser of daily doses of helpful medical tips on 1010WINS.

And oh, yes, he’s also a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital, who somehow manages to find the time to perform about 100 heart surgeries a year (he has office hours on Thursdays if you’re wondering) and a part-time superhero who goes around rescuing New Yorkers in peril all in the course of an average day. At lunch he told me of another tale of  being at the right place at the right time which occurred the same month he came to the aid of the woman who was seriously injured when she was hit by a cab on Sixth Avenue. During a trip to Salt Lake City, a fellow marathoner literally fell in Dr. Oz’s path when the man went into distress due to a heart problem. Of course, Dr. Oz was able to put him in an ambulance, visit him the next day and has stayed in touch to stay apprised of his defacto patient’s recovery.

The good doctor is launching his own lifestyle magazine in partnership with Hearst titled Dr. Oz The Good Life, and this afternoon he brought along a retinue of bigwigs and handlers from his various projects and his charming wife Lisa Oz, whose CV includes a career in television and her own slew of bestsellers (the couple co-authored their You series together; Lisa wrote Us solo and as a result, says Dr. Oz, his wife has “one more bestseller than I do!”).

Barry Diller, David Zaslav and the Exclusive on Star Jones’ TV Plans

LunchAtMichaelsIt was business as usual at Michael’s today, which means it was wall-to-wall moguls (Barry Diller, David Zaslav), EICs (Liz Vaccariello, Alison Brower) and TV newsers (Ron Insana, Felicia Taylor and Lynn Sherr) – and plenty of other famous faces. I was joined by Star Jones, one of my favorite regulars at 55th and Fifth, who I met when I was one of the first reporters to cover the freshman season of The View. Suffice to say there’s been plenty that’s happened in Star’s professional and personal life since then, and she’s come through it all wiser, funnier and more determined than ever to forge her own path. Sitting at Table 1 today, nibbling on her kale salad with a side of salmon, she practically glowed with happiness.

She was excited to tell me about her role as chief development officer and national spokesperson for the National Association of Professional Women, where she is serving as a passionate advocate for members on healthcare and equal pay, which, she said, has become a tent pole issue. With most of NAPW’s members in middle management and plenty of entrepreneurs in the ranks, Star is all about “stiletto networking,” as she told me, which involves developing programming for the membership that will help empower them to reach their goals. “This is an opportunity for me to use all my experience and not just be in one box as an attorney, talk show host or author. Women’s lives are comprised of so many difference facets; it’s exciting to act as a advocate for NAPW, as I’ve done with my work for the American Heart Association, for causes that I’m passionate about.” She has also created the NAPW Foundation which, in addition to AHA, supports the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Dress for Success and Girls Inc. Star also brings another valuable skill to NAPW:  finding the right benefits and services to offer to its members. “You know I’m good at getting perks for the sisters!”

Ever since she forged her age on her driver’s license (upping it from 15 to 16) so she could get a job at McDonald’s (“The statute has run out on that crime!”), Star has been creating unforeseen opportunities for herself that have defied expectations. In the early 90s, she went from the Brooklyn DA’s office to the small screen when she was tapped as a commentator for Court TV and Inside Edition, covering high profile cases like William Kennedy Smith’s rape trial and The OJ Simpson case. By the time she left her seat at the table with Barbara Walters on her ABC chatfest, she was one of daytime television’s most famous faces. Of her run on The View: “They were the best eight years of my life,” she said before adding with some laughter, “But I was on for nine years and that last year was a little rough.” But, like they say, time heals all wounds, and Star reports her relationship with Walters is better than ever. Kristine Welker Named VP, CRO of Dr. Oz Magazine

The leadership at Hearst Magazines’ Dr. Oz magazine is coming together. Kristine Welker has been named vice president, publisher and chief revenue officer of the forthcoming title, which is expected to debut in the first quarter of next year. Earlier this month, Alison Brower was named editor-in-chief.

Welker has been with Hearst since 1999. Since 2010, she has served as vice president, chief revenue officer of Hearst Magazines Digital Media.

“With a magazine, dedicated website and other media extensions, this new brand will offer a multi-platform experience for consumers and a unique opportunity for marketers,” said Welker, in a statement. “It is an exciting launch with the power of Dr. Oz and Hearst behind it that will create a new lifestyle category, and I am thrilled to help build it.”

That Dr. Oz magazine that we’ve been hearing about now has an editor. Alison Brower, most recently special projects editor at The Hollywood Reporter, is set to become the title’s editor-in-chief.

From 2010 to 2012, Brower served as a consultant for brands such as Good HousekeepingSeventeenSelf and Shape. From 2005 to 2010, she served as executive editor of Redbook.

“Alison is an exceptionally talented and versatile editor, with deep experience developing women’s lifestyle content,” said Ellen Levine, Hearts Magazines’ editorial director, in a statement. “She understands what works across platforms and will work closely with Dr. Oz to bring his advice, spirit and uplifting message to life for readers in print and online.”

The Oz’s magazine is expected to hit newsstands in the first quarter of next year.

Matthew Belloni Named Exec Editor of Hollywood Reporter, Alison Brower Joins Team

We have more Hollywood Reporter news to pass along. Matthew Belloni, who has been with THR since 2006, has been promoted from news director to executive editor, and Alison Brower, former interim editor-in-chief of Seventeen, is joining THR as special projects editor.

Janice Min, deputy editor of THR, said Belloni was more than qualified to take for the exec editor position. ”In addition to his unparalleled newsroom instincts, Matt has helped steer the news coverage of THR and built the industry’s most eagerly watched blog on the intersection between law and entertainment,” said Min, in a statement. “He’s helped move THR forward into uncharted territory, and will continue to do so in new role as executive editor.”

Brower has held a variety of high-level editorial positions during her career, including executive editor of Redbook and special projects editor at O, The Oprah Magazine.

“Alison has one of the best eyes in the business for creating content that connects readers to publications with special issues, events and partnerships,” Min said. “Her ability to coordinate multiple factors that elevate both editorial and the brand will be key to THR.”

Hollywood Reporter Bolsters Marketing, Editorial Departments

It feels a little bit this week like the inauguration of Janice Min’s second two-year term. Having re-branded and relaunched a struggling Hollywood trade publication as a consumer weekly magazine and website, Min is seemingly gearing up for the next big operational step forward towards (hopefully) break-even.

On Tuesday, THR announced the appointment of a VP of marketing, Anna Magzanyan. She was previously with Clear Channel, where she handled iHeartRadio, and the LA Times Media Group. Today, the first of several waves of editorial hires is being heralded.

The biggest and in some ways most surprising move is that news editor Matthew Belloni (pictured) has been promoted to the same post as Owen Phillips. The two will share the title of executive editor and work alongside a group that now includes deputy editorial director  Mark Miller. He reports directly to Min and comes over from the downsizing Daily Beast/Newsweek. Alison Brower, most recently the interim editor-in-chief of Seventeen, has been appointed THR special projects editor.
