Gabriel García Márquez, Nobel Laureate, Dies at 87 (GalleyCat)
Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez passed away Thursday. He was 87 years old. Time The Nobel Prize-winning author was hospitalized for nine days in late March for an infection in his lungs and urinary tract. He had been recovering in his home in Mexico City since April 8. NYT His death was confirmed by Cristóbal Pera, his former editor at Random House. García Márquez, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982, wrote fiction rooted in a mythical Latin American landscape of his own creation, but his appeal was universal. His books were translated into dozens of languages. He was among a select roster of canonical writers — Dickens, Tolstoy and Hemingway among them — who were embraced both by critics and a mass audience. The Guardian Journalists gathered outside García Márquez’s house in Mexico City in the hope that one of the family members who was reportedly at his side would emerge. Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto expressed sadness at the death of “one of the greatest writers of our time,” in the name of Mexico, the novelist’s adopted home. Chilean writer Luis Sepúlveda was quoted by the Mexican newspaper Reforma as saying that he was “the most important writer in Spanish of the 20th century.” WSJ Born in the sleepy town of Aracataca, Colombia, García Márquez was best known for his 1967 masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude. In a career spanning more than 60 years, García Márquez wrote some of the Spanish language’s most revered books, many of which became best sellers in the U.S. They included Autumn of The Patriarch, Chronicle of A Death Foretold, Love in The Time of Cholera and The General in His Labyrinth. García Márquez was also an accomplished journalist, whose lyrical, deeply reported stories first caught the eye of readers in Colombia’s capital, Bogotá, in the early 1950s. He later became renowned not only his profiles of presidents and despots but for the real-life close ties he cultivated with leaders ranging from Fidel Castro to Bill Clinton to François Mitterrand.

Prior to joining All You, Willdorf served as Budget Travel’s editor. Her work has appeared in magazines such as Glamour, New York, and Real Simple.

“Having played such a key creative role in reimagining All You on its numerous multi-media platforms, Nina is the ideal person to lead All You as it embarks on a period of rapid growth and innovation,” said Time Inc. group editor, Clare McHugh, in a statement. “I’m thrilled for Nina and even more thrilled for the brand.”

All You Expands Outside Walmart

All You, the Time Inc. publication targeting readers on a budget, is taking a big step. All You has been sold exclusively in Walmart’s and Sam’s Club’s since it launched in 2004, but starting in April, it will be sold in other retailers, such as Safeway, Target, CVS, Walgreens and Barnes & Noble.

All You’s publisher, Suzanne Quint, said the decision to expand the glossy’s distribution was driven by a change in peoples’ behavior. Quint described this phenomenon as “cross-shopping;” essentially, people are using more than just one platform to shop.

“Recognizing this cross-shopping behavior, All You is expanding distribution to meet the needs of this growing population and realize untapped consumer demand,” Quint said, in a statement. “With our expansion we’re looking forward to reaching more consumers wherever they shop and continuing to drive sales for marketers.”

In anticipation of the move, All You has increased its rate base by 50,000.

All You to Increase Rate Base

Jan2014All You is raising its rate base from 1.5 million to 1.55 million, beginning with its January 2014 issue. This marks the 11th increase since the magazine launched in 2004.

“Strong consumer demand, passionate reader engagement, robust subscription renewals, and success in school fundraising programs, have helped fuel the brand’s growth,” said Suzanne Quint, All You’s publisher, in a statement. “We’re proud to connect with a resourceful, social community of women who are committed to finding the best value for their families.”

All You also enjoyed strong ad sales to close out the year. The magazine’s December ad pages were up almost 11 percent compared to December 2012.

All You Names New Executive Editor

Nina Willdorf has been named Executive Editor of Time Inc.’s All You. Willdorf was most recently a Contributing Editor and media spokesperson for Travelocity. Prior to that she was Editor-in-Chief of Budget Travel, from 2008 through late 2011.

“Nina is a natural fit,” said All You’s Editor-in-Chief, Clare McHugh. “As an expert in affordable living, she has inspired consumers to save and spend wisely — from travel to fashion to wedding planning.  We’re excited to have her on board.”

Willdorf starts at All You on July 2.
