Rolling Stone Loses Star Reporter Matt Taibbi

MattTaibiPicThe most recent Rolling Stone item by Matt Taibbi is headlined “The Vampire Squid Strikes Again.” That colorful expression is also sticking to the talented investigative reporter tonight as news breaks that he is leaving the Jann Wenner publication for First Look Media.

On Twitter, New York Times reporter John Schwartz quickly surmised that vanguard journalism funder Pierre Omidyar “likes vampire squid,” while colleague Ravi Somaiya closes out his brief exclusive item with the lineage of this Taibbi allegory:

Mr. Taibbi is noted for capturing the spirit of the aftermath of the financial crisis with a series of articles in Rolling Stone that examined the misbehavior of Wall Street executives and the risky lending practices that led to a near collapse of the global economy. He used vivid writing and colorful language to describe the root causes of the crisis, including the now-famous metaphor he used to describe Goldman Sachs, calling the bank “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money.”

FishbowlLA Set Visit: HuffPost Live

For HuffPost Live co-host Jacob Soboroff, a signature moment during his first six months of service involved the 2013 Sundance documentary The Square.

When the filmmakers arrived at the Beverly Hills studio, one was on the phone with an acquaintance in Cairo. By the time the visiting duo sat down for their interview, a producer had arranged for that acquaintance to be part of the on-air discussion as well, as an Egyptian subject matter expert (via Google hangout).

The term “expert” is one of many being redefined daily by Soboroff and colleagues Alyona Minkovski and Nancy Redd from 3 to 7 p.m. PT, when the dynamic trio cap HuffPost Live’s twelve-hour weekday block. An expert can be anyone and everyone, often recruited through social media; journalism meanwhile is very much here a mix of the subjective and objective. As HuffPost Live president Roy Sekoff told us during our visit last Friday, “We want our hosts to have opinions.”

The Alyona Show Will Come to a Close This Week

Yesterday we reported that RT’s Alyona Minkovski would be joining HuffPost’s fledgling video network HuffPost Live as a producer and host. What we didn’t know is if she’d be bringing her popular online news show The Alyona Show with her. Well, we have an answer for you: no. As of the close of this week, the DC-based Alyona Show will be put to rest as its host heads to LA to start work for HuffPost Live.

“She’s working on something completely new,” says HuffPost spokesperson Tiffany Guarnaccia. “She’ll be 100% on HuffPost Live, which will reflect the all-encompassing tastes of the Huffington Post itself.”

We here at FishbowlLA were big fans of The Alyona Show, in part for her willingness to have edgy guests like Mark Ames and Yasha Levine of The eXiled on. Here’s hoping she’ll continue to showcase great alternative voices at HuffPost Live.

HuffPost Live Adds to Team

HuffPost Live, the soon-to-launch streaming video network from The Huffington Post, has added Alyona Minkovski to its team. Minkovski has been named a Host/Producer for the online venture. Minkovski comes to the company from RT.com, where she hosted “The Alyona Show,” a news program based out of Washington D.C.

Minkovski joins a HuffPost Live team that already includes Ahmed Shihab-Eldin, Alicia Menendez, Marc Lamont Hill, Abby Huntsman, Josh Zepps, Mike Sacks, Jacob Soboroff and Janet Varney.

HuffPost Live launches August 13.

Alyona Minkovski Joins HuffPost Live

Alyona Minkovski, the host of RT’s The Alyona Show, has landed a new gig that’s bringing her to Los Angeles. Minkovski has been tapped to join Huffington Post’s fledgling video network HuffPost Live–set to launch on August 13th–as a host/producer.

Minkovski will be working out of HuffPost’s new LA studio. No word yet if she’ll be bringing The Alyona Show with her to LA, or if she has something new in the works. We’ve reached out to HuffPo for comment. We’ll keep you posted.
