Good Magazine’s Editorial Department Decimated by Layoffs

Bad news for Good readers – The bulk of the Los Angeles-based magazine’s editorial staff was laid off today. According to Poynter, those handed pink slips include executive editor Ann Friedman, managing editor Megan Greenwell, senior editor Cord Jefferson, lifestyle editor Amanda Hess, business editor Tim Fernholz, and associate editor Nona Willis Aronowitz. Wylie Overstreet stated on Twitter that he was leaving voluntarily.

Last night Good magazine threw a launch party for their latest issue, and it may have been a last hurrah. How can they publish without a staff? The company has released no statement about the layoffs, just a vague tweet at 7:57 this evening, several hours after the news broke:

Women’s Media Center Study Shows Media is Still a Boy’s Club

Women made a few gains in the newspaper biz in 2011. But other than that, the picture isn’t pretty for women in media according to a new study by the Women’s Media Center. Despite the fact that 73.5 percent of journalism and mass communications graduates were women–a percentage that has remained fairly consistent for more than a decade–the numbers continue to dip for women in the media workforce.

By almost every other measure, media remains overwhelmingly male, and it’s getting maler. Last year, women made up only 22 percent of the local radio workforce, compared to 29.2 percent in 2010. Women’s representation in sports news hasn’t budged since 2008 (just 11 percent of editors, 10 percent of columnists, and 7 percent of reporters are women). In one year, women dropped from 20 percent of behind-the-scenes entertainment television roles to just 4 percent. Worldwide, women are the subjects of 24 percent of news stories. Just 21 percent of Sunday morning television commentators are women. Only a third of speaking characters in films are female (and about a quarter of them are dressed sexily). Women direct 5 percent of films.

One thing the study didn’t take into account was new media jobs. Which is unfortunate. Because that is undoubtedly where most of the hires will be in the next… millennium or so.

The Porn Star with a Teenage Girl Following

Porn is the rare industry where the women both outnumber and out-earn the men. The male performers in straight porn tend to be tan muscleheads, and function almost as backdrop for their female counterparts. But breakout star James Deen, a lanky, Jewish hipster-type, has proven that audiences, especially females, are looking for more from boys in porn.

Amanda Hess, lifestyle editor of GOOD magazine, writes about Deen’s unexpected fanbase. We were especially amused by this description of one 17-year-old fan:

Emily runs a Tumblr blog dedicated to her two obsessions: Twilight and James Deen. Thanks to Deen, Emily is no longer watching porn for the generalized humping. “When I watch his videos, I don’t really pay attention to the sex,” Emily says. “I watch his videos for his reaction. It amazes me.”

TBD Offers Accidental TMI

We found this via our lovely sister site, FishbowlDC, but it was too damn good not to share here with all of you. It concerns a teeny little minor correction to a recent TBD post titled “HIV-positive black gay men to get the Bayard Rustin Project, a District campaign against AIDS.” Serious stuff, right? Writer Amanda Hess still managed, albeit inadvertently, to make it high-larious:

Correction:

This blog post originally stated that one in three black men who have sex with me is HIV positive. In fact, the statistic applies to black men who have sex with men. Also, the photo caption incorrectly attributed Bayard Rustin’s photo to “Wikipedia Commons.” The correct title is “Wikimedia Commons.”

Glad that’s been cleared up.
