AMC Networks Buys 49.9 Percent Stake in BBC America (TVNewser)
AMC Networks has agreed to purchase a 49.9 percent stake in BBC America from BBC Worldwide for $200 million. AMC Networks will look for greater distribution for BBC World News in the U.S. B&C BBC Worldwide will retain a 50.1 percent equity stake in the cable channel, while AMC Networks will have operational control of BBCA, including affiliate and advertising sales, though it will still be consistent with BBC’s editorial standards and policies. THR The cable networks company and the commercial arm of U.K. public broadcaster BBC announced the deal Thursday after reports of their talks first emerged over the summer. The channel airs such BBC favorites as Doctor Who, Sherlock, Top Gear and Planet Earth. AMC Networks operates the AMC, Sundance, WE tv and IFC channels, and can now add the so-far independent BBC America when it negotiates carriage fees, giving both partners increased leverage in talks with pay-TV operators. WSJ The deal comes as the biggest pay-TV distributors are consolidating, prompting analyst speculation that content players will also have to seek greater scale. Variety Executives at both companies portrayed the arrangement as one borne out of a desire to gain greater reach for premium content that attracts high-income audiences. The two sides have worked together in the recent past. The two have collaborated on series including Top of The Lake and The Honourable Woman as well as the coming program One Child. AMC Networks and BBC Television have agreed to continue to jointly pursue a number of content investment opportunities on a range of future projects, both through BBC America and other AMC Networks channels. BBC America is to be managed as a standalone asset within AMC’s portfolio.

Schneider’s new firm will be called Schneider Global Strategies, and its first clients will be ABC News and parent company The Disney ABC Television Group. Variety Townsend, who has worked tirelessly for ABC News in any number of matters, has been with the unit as its vice president of communications since 2011. Prior to that, she worked with NBCUniversal in its corporate communications department. According to Nielsen Fast National Data, Mike Rowe‘s Somebody’s Gotta Do It is CNN Original Series’ best premiere ever in the adults 25-54 demo, averaging 507,000 viewers Wednesday night, coming in second to The Kelly File, which drew 544,000. THR / The Live Feed Somebody’s Gotta Do It marked a 255 percent advantage over MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show – which hit an all-time low during the third quarter. The series also averaged 943,000 total viewers, besting MSNBC by 25 percent. NYT Somebody’s Gotta Do It easily topped CNN‘s previous best result in its recent introduction of original series. The Hunt With John Walsh pulled in 330,000 viewers in the 25-54 group with its premiere in July. Deadline Hollywood Rowe’s opening represented a 152 percent hike in the news demo compared with the time slot’s average the prior four Wednesdays (201,000), and a 77 percent jump in overall crowd (534,000). CNNMoney Shows like Rowe’s — what CNN calls “original series,” distinguishing from newscasts or talk shows — cost more to produce than newscasts do, but tend to be more popular and can be replayed many times. They are a centerpiece of CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker’s strategy to improve the ratings performance of the company’s American cable channel. As part of Turner 2020, the cost-cutting and reorganization plan announced earlier this year, the parent company of CNN, HLN, TBS and others has announced it plans to cut 1,475 jobs. CNNMoney Turner Broadcasting, a unit of Time Warner Inc., will cut its total workforce by about 10 percent in the coming weeks through a mix of buyouts, layoffs and other measures, the company said Monday. Capital New York The headcount reduction will include buyouts of staff over the age of 55, layoffs and unfilled open roles. Staff that will be laid off will be informed within the next two weeks. That number also takes into consideration the addition of 150 new jobs in “growth areas” at the company. THR The cuts will come at all levels from across the news, entertainment, kids, young adult and sports networks and businesses as well as corporate functions, in 18 Turner locations around the world. About 300 positions will be eliminated within CNN Worldwide, or about 8.5 percent of the roughly 3,500-strong workforce. WSJ This summer, Time Warner rebuffed a takeover bid from 21st Century Fox Inc. Morgan will write several times a week, while pursing new TV ventures in the U.S. He is a former editor of British tabloids the News of The World and the Daily Mirror. THR MailOnline is the online version of the U.K.’s Daily Mail newspaper and claims to be the biggest English-language newspaper website in the world. Morgan announced in September that he’d left CNN, several months after his eponymous talk show was canceled. He added in tweets about his departure that he’d turned down a two-year deal from CNN president Jeff Zucker to host several interview specials. Dean Baquet, the New York Times’ executive editor, has officially revamped the paper’s masthead. Gone is the “managing editor” title; it’s being replaced by four “deputy executive editors,” who “have already proven they can run stories that take on big institutions, who have covered a world of war and proven they can lead with humanity.” NYT They are Susan Chira, Janet Elder, Matthew Purdy and Ian Fisher. A fifth editor, Tom Bodkin, will be given the title of creative director, a position equal to the four deputy executive editors. Politico / Dylan Byers on Media Through these changes Baquet hopes to make the relationship between the Times’ digital and print sides more fluid. “I anticipate people moving on and off the masthead as our needs evolve,” he wrote in a memo to staff Wednesday, “and it is important that these moves not be seen as measures of who is up and who is down, but rather as appointments aimed at keeping our journalism and our entire operation as vibrant as possible.” Capital New York The appointments reflect a push for better coordination and cooperation between departments as the Times works on pushing out its journalism to digital readers more effectively. Peter Chernin, AT&T to Buy Majority Stake in YouTube Network Fullscreen (THR)
Peter Chernin’s The Chernin Group and AT&T have finalized a deal to acquire a majority stake in YouTube network Fullscreen. GigaOM Financial details of the transaction weren’t released, but Fullscreen CEO George Strompolos, who previously handled partner relations for YouTube, will retain “a material ownership stake in the company,” according to the release. Re/code The sale is supposed to wrap up in the next month; ad holding giant WPP, which invested in Fullscreen earlier, will remain as a “strategic shareholder.” The deal is likely to value Fullscreen, which says it has 4 billion monthly video views, between $200 million and $300 million. Earlier in the year, Disney bought YouTube network Maker Studios, which had 5.5 billion views, in a deal that could ultimately hit $950 million. That sale kicked off a new wave of investor interest in Web video networks, which for now generate most of their eyeballs and revenue on YouTube. Capital New York Dreamworks acquired YouTube channel AwesomenessTV in 2011 for $150 million, Discovery acquired Revision3 in 2012 for $30 million, and Legendary Entertainment bought Nerdist for an undisclosed sum in 2012. A revamped The View premiered Monday morning with its original co-executive producer sitting in a Queen’s throne getting doused with affection. “Thank you my pals,” Barbara Walters said as co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Nicolle Wallace and Rosie Perez looked toward her throne. LostRemote On social media, fans were not really feeling the new View. The biggest complaints were about the new format. Many complained about the new hosts, although Perez was an all-around favorite. THR / The Live Feed Goldberg kicked off the premiere of its 18th season by introducing it as “the newer View,” filmed in an ABC Broadcast Center studio space and featuring a tweaked logo. “We’re gonna try a lot of new stuff — some of it will work and some of it won’t, but the thing that will never change is its great conversations with great women.” Mediaite O’Donnell caught the audience up with what’s been going on in her personal life since then. They then gave the floor over to Perez and Wallace to introduce themselves. Perez talked about a Broadway show she’s working on and her philanthropic efforts, while Wallace got to share her background in politics and the Bush administration. When Wallace mentioned she was a Republican, O’Donnell piped up, “I really like her, I swear to God!” Variety The audience is more prominent and appears more frequently during the program. A new producer, Bill Wolff, who once oversaw MSNBC’s flagship Rachel Maddow, will now run proceedings.
