CNN Vet Alan Duke Jumps to Radar Online

AlanDukePhotoFor the past five and a half years, for all but one month, Alan Duke‘s byline has been the number one desktop-views attraction at CNN Digital. During that one month in question, Duke went on vacation for three weeks.

More specifically, for the first nine months of 2014, Duke’s byline attracted a staggering 300 million desktop page views. His most notable recent CNN item was a September 18 report, with Susan Candiotti, that Yorkville Endoscopy clinic workers told investigators they saw and heard Joan Rivers‘ personal doctor take a selfie with the unconscious entertainer.

Although Duke was spared in the latest round of CNN layoffs, the journalist – who had been with CNN since 1989 – decided it was time to leave. As of this week, he is the Los Angeles-based national correspondent for revamping AMI website Radar Online.

“Last month, there was an event that really told me this was the time to leave,” Duke tells FishbowlNY via telephone. “We had an internal “huddle” [meeting] for CNN Digital, which was both a pep talk and an update on business affairs. In the executives’ statements and voices, I just picked up panic and chaos.”

Shawn Perine Bulks Up to AMI Chief Content Director

ShawnPerineShawn Perine (pictured) published his first bodybuilding article in 1982 for his high school newspaper. He started freelancing for Flex magazine many years later, moved to Los Angeles in 2004 when he was promoted to senior writer and eventually shifted back to New York where, since 2011, he has served as editor-in-chief of Muscle & Fitness.

This month, as part of the latest shuffling of editorial ranks at AMI, Perine has ascended further. He is now chief content director for the company’s enthusiast brands Muscle & Fitness, Muscle & Fitness Hers and Flex.

“Shawn is one of the few people who has the gravitas to fill the void in the sport and industry that has existed since the passing of Joe Weider,” said AMI chairman, CEO and president David J. Pecker via statement to FishbowlNY.

If you go to the new In Touch Weekly website unveiled today by Bauer XCel Media, it appears at first as if there is only a single story posted. Something about Michael Sheen, Sarah Silverman and matrimonial handicapping.

It has come to my attention that some of the Community posts shared under my name were taken from articles on other websites. While I’ve been traveling, I enlisted the help of a freelancer who assisted me with my social media and I didn’t know that these posts were plagiarized.

Joe Pompeo‘s piece in the August issue of Capital magazine about the National Enquirer is full of descriptive detail.

Sourcing of Enquirer stories, the reporter writes, sometimes ‘looks thinner than a supermodel’s waistline.’ More flatteringly, he found editor-in-chief Dylan Howard to be ‘looking sharp in his tortoise-shell glasses and dark-blue linen Ludlow suit’ during a recent visit to the AMI publication’s consolidated NYC operations. To Pompeo, Howard appeared even a little… angelic:

The cherubic 32-year-old was installed in the Enquirer’s top masthead slot when American Media Inc. moved the title back to Manhattan from the company’s flagship Florida headquarters this May. His ambitions are much bigger than bikinis.

Specter of Philip Seymour Hoffman Looms Over National Enquirer NYC Relocation

And that, according to his sources, the decision to not include editor-in-chief Tony Frost in the migration was payback for a huge, recent mess:

Frost’s ouster comes months after an embarrassing February Enquirer story that falsely claimed the late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman had a gay lover. Insiders claim the Hoffman story cost Frost his job, but the tabloid’s publisher, American Media Inc., denies there is a connection between the two.

Today, in a subsequent piece by New York Times staff reporter James Barron, the man taking over in Lower Manhattan for Frost – Dylan Howard – reiterates the company line:

Howard denied that the changes had to do with an Enquirer article published after the death of the actor Philip Seymour Hoffman in February…

Bogus National Enquirer Story Begets $45,000 Writing Prize

NationalEnquirerLogoIn the space of three weeks, the National Enquirer has gone from being duped by a David Bar Katz impersonator, to withdrawing and apologizing for an erroneous story, to endowing a stage play writing initiative hatched by the real Mr. Katz.

It’s all laid out in the New York Times by “About New York” writer Jim Dwyer. Ahead of a full-page ad that will appear in Wednesday’s NYT print edition as part of Enquirer parent company American Media Incorporated’s quick settlement with Katz. From Dwyer’s piece:

The amount of money being paid by The Enquirer will not be disclosed, [Katz's attorney Judd] Burstein said, adding, “It’s enough for the [newly formed American Playwriting] Foundation to give out these grants for years to come.” He formally filed papers to dismiss the lawsuit on Tuesday.

David Perel Out at American Media

Florida gossip king Jose Lambiet has the exclusive on the end of an era at American Media Inc. Longtime employee David Perel is out.

The only question, since AMI wouldn’t comment to Lambiet for the item, is whether Perel was forced out or has left of his own volition:*

Perel’s contract is believed to run until April, but two sources at AMI tell Gossip Extra Perel was told not to bother showing up for work. The way Perel tells it, he’s pursuing other opportunities.

Regardless, the news should delight a few celebs, and their loved ones!

The Kardashians to Launch Magazine Dedicated to Themselves

New year, more Kardashian. Despite The Kim Kardashian Effect losing its power toward the end of 2011, 2012 is starting with rumors that the family has reached out to several media companies about launching a magazine dedicated to the family.

The New York Post reports that the Kardashians are close to a deal with American Media Inc., which makes sense, since the company already publishes Reality Weekly, a magazine that makes us hate America.

Details about the Kardashian magazine are few and far between, but sources say that the women will be intensely involved editorially and Kris Jenner won’t be the Editor-in-Chief. Of course she won’t. She’ll merely be the Overlord-Selling-Each-Part-of-Her-Family-Until-It-Withers-and-Dies-in-Chief.

Can’t wait for the debut issue! A couple quick cover story ideas: Kim’s “sexy revenge” on waffles, Kourtney can’t find her favorite socks and what Khloe really thinks about giraffes.

Reality Weekly Sets Bar Low

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new low in the magazine industry. Reality Weekly, a magazine dedicated to reality TV and its “stars,” launched Wednesday. WWD reports that the magazine is $1.79 an issue and features the queen of reality TV, Kim Kardashian, on the debut cover.

What’s inside? A weekly column from Victoria Gotti, contributions from Simon Cowell and “exclusives” from West Coast Editor Omarosa. There’s also sections titled “Fights of The Week” and “Hottest Shots.” But that’s not all! There will surely be more crap.

We all have American Media Inc. to thank for blessing us with this new publication. However, if it does well, maybe we should all thank/blame ourselves.
