Jonah Peretti, Studio Mogul?

That’s how the BuzzFeed founder may soon be viewed on the west coast and beyond, per his recent conversation with LA Times reporter Andrea Chang. The company recently moved its west coast office to a new location on Beverly Blvd. and also leases production space nearby.

Peretti notes that Psy‘s mega-popularity came from that video’s “shareability,” and says video is a big missing piece of BuzzFeed:

The LA team, he said, is building the “TV studio and movie studio of the future” by creating original videos to fit these new patterns of media consumption…

How Boston Marathon Bombings Triggered ‘One of the Most Alarming Social Media Events of Our Time’

LA Times business reporter Ken Bensinger and tech beat colleague Andrea Chang take a look this morning at the amateur detective work conducted on Twitter, Reddit, 4chan, Facebook and beyond this week in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings. Their conclusions are not pretty:

This watershed moment for social media quickly spiraled out of control. Legions of Web sleuths cast suspicion on at least four innocent people, spread innumerable bad tips and heightened the sense of panic and paranoia.

“This is one of the most alarming social media events of our time,” said Siva Vaidhyanathan, a media studies professor at the University of Virginia. “We’re really good at uploading images and unleashing amateurs, but we’re not good with the social norms that would protect the innocent.”

Internet Takes Some of the Show Out of CES Show-and-Tell

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES), set to temporarily swell the Las Vegas downtown populace by 25% January 8 through 11, is no longer your grandfather’s CES. Heck, it’s not even your father’s CES.

Take Microsoft. In 2001, they used CES to unveil Xbox; this week, they have no booth on the convention show floor and are not participating in any keynote addresses.* Although a staggering 20,000 new products are still expected to be unveiled, including an 85-inch ultra-high-definition TV from Samsung, the reason for the new M.O. is pretty much universally acknowledged. Groundbreaking products are rarely launched at the show anymore because of the 24-hour news cycle of the Internet, which makes it easy for companies to promote whatever they want, whenever they want.

Ashton Kutcher’s Hands-on Angel Investor Approach

After serving as president and chief executive officer of Guitar Hero, as well as COO at Yahoo, Dan Rosensweig switched to the task of building out college textbook rental service and student network chegg.com. The Santa Clara headquartered firm now boasts over 500 employees and has warehouses in Pasadena, San Francisco, Utah, Oregon and Kentucky.

One of Rosensweig’s investors is Ashton Kutcher, front and center in a recent LA Times article by Andrea Chang about the increasing intersection of celebrities and tech startups. The chegg.com president and CEO explained how he interacts with the Two and a Half Men star:

Rosensweig said Kutcher occasionally visits the startup’s headquarters, recently meeting with the product team for four hours. One Friday afternoon, Kutcher sent an email saying he had spent a couple of hours on the site and had put together a lengthy “series of notes” on his ideas for improvements.
