Ex-Scientologist Sounds Out Church’s ‘Big Gay Problem’

Last week, LA author Skip Press delivered a fascinating three-part report about the Church of Scientology for The Morton Report, a blog created by British author and journalist Andrew Morton. No surprise there; as a former Scientologist (1973-1996), Press knows his subject as thoroughly as anyone.

The focus of Press’ must-read and refreshingly condensed three-part investigation is the Church’s seemingly conflicted dealings with gays and lesbians. In Part 1, Press recalls how a Church case supervisor made disparaging and confidentiality-breaching remarks about musician Jimmie Spheeris, brother of film director Penelope. He also revisits a disastrous auditing session involving Rock Hudson.

In Part 2, Press examines the departure of long-time Scientology advocate John McMaster. But it is in his final installment, published September 23, that Press veers into the most explosive aspect of his “Scientology’s Big Gay Problem” series—the idea that church founder L. Ron Hubbard had some early formative homosexual experiences.

Top Gun Pilot Recalls Early Draft Typos

After U.S. Navy “Topgun” fighter pilot Dave “Bio” Baranek retired from active duty in 1999, he worked with the BBC on a 2004 story about the famous Hollywood film for which he provided aerial sequences and was later quoted in an unauthorized 2008 biography of Tom Cruise written by British journalist Andrew Morton. Now, with the 25th anniversary of Top Gun‘s release upon us, Baranek’s full-length 2010 domestic memoir is getting a renewed PR push.

The Cruise project was sparked by an article in California magazine by Ehud Yonay. The piece caught the attention of Jerry Bruckheimer and the late Don Simpson, leading quickly to a writer and several other Paramount Pictures fact-finders soaking up the lingo at the Naval Fighter Weapons School in Miramar, California. Writes Baranek (pictured) in Topgun Days:

The Hollywood team had several misunderstandings during their visit… For example, we used the term “p-sub-s” for an aircraft’s ability to maneuver. This was used in the early script as “piece of s.”

Andrew Morton Says Tom Cruise #2 at Scientology

tomcruisescientolAP_228x469.jpg

British biographer Andrew Morton has the “church” of L. Ron in a frenzy with his new biography of Tom Cruise. The book claims:

Cruise is the # 2 guy, after David Miscavige,

daughter by Katie Holmes “conceived like Rosemary’s Baby”,

Cruise’s next mission is to recruit David Beckham,

Nicole Kidman “feared blackmail” over sex tapes made with Scientologists,

Idle thought: Kidman should have feared blackmail over Eyes Wide Shut.

The book comes out in the US on the 15th of this month, but won’t appear in the UK, due to the stringent libel laws. Paulette Cooper has been on the receiving end of such lawsuits.

And Dana Goodyear goes inside the Celebrity Centre.
