Len Burnett Buys Back Uptown

Uptown is going back to its roots. According to The New York Post, Len Burnett — a co-founder of Uptown — has bought the title back from Vibe Holdings, which acquired it in 2011.

Burnett, who had been co-CEO of Uptown Media Group and chief revenue officer of Vibe Holdings, will separate from Vibe to concentrate on Uptown. He has already appointed Isoul Harris as the magazine’s new editor-in-chief. Uptown’s former editor, Angela Bronner Helm, left early this month.

Burnett didn’t say how much he paid for the magazine, only that “They [Vibe Holdings] just wanted to put more emphasis on Vibe and the digital portion, and they gave us the opportunity to buy back Uptown.”

Angela Bronner Helm to Step Down as EIC of Uptown

Angela Bronner Helm is stepping down as editor-in-chief of Uptown. The December/January 2013 issue, along with the Weddings & Travel issue, will be her last as editor of the magazine.

“The time has come to branch out and spread my wings,” Bronner Helm told FishbowlNY. “I have learned so much as editor, and am honored to have worked with so many talented and creative people during my time at Uptown.”

Bronner Helm came to Uptown in 2010 as its managing editor. Prior to that she spent seven years at AOL, most recently as the editor of The Huffington Post vertical BlackVoices. Bronner Helm has been editor-in-chief of Uptown since last December.

The December/January issue of Uptown, featuring Kerry Washington on the cover, hits newsstands December 25.

Pitch the Finer Things in Life to Uptown

Among black magazines, Uptown distinguishes itself by targeting more affluent readers interested in the finer things in life. The pub’s New York edition is distributed nationally, and, in addition to FOB stories about the latest food, clothing and entertainment trends, freelancers are encouraged to pitch longer, research-based stories for the feature well.

“We’re always looking for good, relevant stories that relate to our demographic,” explained editor-in-chief Angela Bronner Helm. “And it doesn’t necessarily have to be a profile on a black trendsetter or industry leader, even though those are good.” Case in point: a recently assigned 2,000-word feature on African-American professionals and their use of cognitive steroids, like Adderall and Ritalin.

Angela Bronner Helm Leaves AOL, Heads Uptown

After nearly five months without a managing editor, Uptown magazine has hired Angela Bronner Helm for the job. Formerly senior editor at AOL’s Black Voices, Bronner Helm replaces Nicole Saunders, who left the magazine in April.

In a farewell email obtained by FishbowlNY, Bronner Helm writes: “After six years at AOL and almost four at Black Voices, I have decided to move on… My next stop is as Managing Editor at Uptown Magazine, a niche luxury lifestyle mag based in my beloved Harlem. The possibilities are endless.”
