Does Anna Nicole Smith Have a Love Chiild on the Reservation?

anna_nicole_smith_ss_122705_01.jpg

The Phoenix New Times has another chapter in the Anna Nicole Smith saga: her Native American son, Marshall Soto. Charles Tatum reports on Johnny Soto, a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation, who claims he had a passionate affair with Smith in 2001 and she bore a son (after hiding the pregnancy). Soto has the birth certificate and other documents to prove it. But the romance had a sordid side:

“Sometimes I felt like I was being used, and it left a bad taste in my mouth,” says Soto. “But I was just as guilty as she was. The only whites I’d ever had sex with were prostitutes, and I couldn’t get enough of Anna Nicole. I fell under her spell. I did whatever she asked.”

But later, Smith’s use of drugs and careless disrespect cooled Soto’s ardor:

She kept saying she wanted me to use my ‘bow and arrow’ on her ‘ax wound.’ I told her that was no ax wound, it was the Grand Canyon!

If Soto prevails in court, he’s promised half to the Tohono O’odham Nation which would become the richest Indian nation in the southwestern United States.

Anna Nicole Smith is finally getting her funeral today in the Bahamas, according to TMZ. Her mother, Virgie Arthur tried to stop the proceedings, but a Bahamanian judge threw out her petition, and the tricked-out white hearse decorated with pink ribbons and feathers rolled on. Smith, dressed in a tiara and pink gown, will be buried next to her son. Slash, of Guns ‘n Roses was sighted among the congregation at the church.

Lunch at Michael’s: Is Dave Zinczenko Ready For Prime Time?

Magazine moguls kept things interesting today at 55th and Fifth. Without the usual intriguing mix of celebrities (who were, undoubtedly still recovering from Oscar overload) to observe, we spent the afternoon wondering what the editors and behind-the-scenes execs were plotting over their cobb salads. Our good friend, Men’s Health honcho Dave Zinczenko, told lunchtime chronicler Diane Clehane that he’s “close” to inking a television deal with Al Roker‘s production company. The program would be a showcase for the burgeoning Men’s Health brand and might even feature the always camera-ready Dave who has been refining his telegenic talents on Today‘s couch for some time now.

Here’s the rundown on the rest of the crowd who dined & dished:

1. Nightline’s Cynthia McFadden, Ruth Friendly and an unidentified gentleman. We caught Cynthia’s broadcast the other night where she reported on the on-going Anna Nicole Smith saga. Kudos for striking just the right tone of dispassionate distaste while filling us in (we want to, but we can’t look away) on the latest details of this train wreck that won’t go away.

2. Michael Lewittes and an unidentified blonde gal.

3. Wayne Tabach.

4. Today’s Al Roker and Jim Bell.

5. Gerry Byrne and guest.

6. Liz Finkel, with we hear, her fiancé. Congrats!

Buzzing Like Flies: A Roundup of the Anna Nicole Smith Coverage

annasmile.jpgAnna Nicole Smith coverage has gone from the ridiculous to the just plain gross, with TMZ.com showing photos of the dead woman’s refrigerator.

While Entertainment Tonight pays Howard K. Stern a reported $1 million for his “story,” E! Online and others have their head in the sands of the Bahamas, following Stern’s battle over 5-month-old ATM, er, girl Dannielynn.

Thank goodness for the steady, staid voice of establishment print media, which would never stoop to put this scoop on A1.

Oops.

Caryn James in the NYT takes the media to task for gawking at Anna Nicole Smith — both in life and in death. Then she goes on to basically blame Anna Nicole for being too tantalizing not to watch: “Her sense of how to court attention was simply to show up, pose and practically say, ‘Come get me, use me.’”

Tim Rutten’s mea culpa in the LAT is a little better. In it, he explains how newspaper editors use the number of “hits” a story gets on their Web sites when determining story placement for the next day’s paper.

But he loses us at the end when he suggests journalists should use this case to reconsider this popularity contest approach, saying, “It’s a good moment for American newspapers to take a reflective breath to consider just how they want to play this numbers game — or, more important, whether they want to play it at all. If that were to occur, then Anna Nicole Smith would not have died in vain.”

Good point, Rutten. We’re sure Anna Nicole would have gone whistling to her grave, had she known her demise would restore journalistic integrity.

From ‘Ice Pop’ To ‘Shakes’: Tabloids’ Tenor Turns For Anna Nicole

anna_nicole_fbny.jpgFollowing the media coverage of the increasingly bizarre Anna Nicole Smith death case — from surprisingly reverential to unsurprisingly sensational — the tabloids, while picking up the TrimSpa thread early, seemed to shy away from Anna Nicole’s eating habits. Well, at least for 24 hours.

Saturday’s Daily News front page headline:

ICE POP

Of course, Anna Nicole plus frozen sperm plus baby-Daddy mystery is why tabloids are printed.

Then, today’s Post:

In a case this bizarre, though, everything’s relevant.

The L.A. Superior Court judge presiding over an emergency hearing in the Anna-Nicole Smith paternity case this morning barred journalists from the courtroom. But that didn’t stop one enterprising TV journo from sneaking inside. Would the journo get the scoop?

    Nope.

A tattle-tailing Access Hollywood producer alerted the bailiff to the boob-tube interloper and got his butt bounced. Our spies tell us she then called her editor and boasted, “I totally outed him to the bailiff.”

And they said journalistic competition in this town was dead.

ABC News Asks What Killed Anna Nicole, Exclusively

    what_killed_anna_nicole.jpg

Again, how does a question qualify as an “exclusive”?

Nonetheless, here’s one “exclusive” question examined by Dr. Michael Welner:

    Is murder a realistic possibility?

It is a possibility that should at least be explored. The mere notion that Anna Nicole Smith had “problems,” lost a son and was battling legal messes does not resolve the potential for her homicide. Marilyn Monroe was also an emotional tinderbox who died in what came to be known as a suicide but without fully resolved questions. What compounds the questions here is the death of Smith’s son months earlier, under suspicious circumstances. True, her son died from an apparent combination of antidepressants and opiates. But someone with a homicidal agenda could certainly overdose him. Such was the controversy in the death of Las Vegas hotel magnate Ted Binion. Even if tampering with a medicine or drug dose were too difficult to arrange, it is far easier to poison someone and to avoid discovery with what one is already taking than to ply someone with a foreign substance that would clearly show itself on autopsy as lethal.
