WGA 07 Strike Week 4: Knock Wood

The Pencils2MediaMoguls delivery is set to go. Of course, moguls being cheap SOBs, they’ll probably hand these out as Christmas bonuses.

Jonathan Tasini posts about the sweatshop that is reality TV. Unfortunately, he lumps the good, the bad and the laugh-out-loud dreadful all together. There’s a number of DGA shows in the reality world–and the WGA muffed their attempt at organizing at ANTM.

Send Daddy back to work–a child’s plea.

Doncha wish your writer was snark like me?
Paul Brownfield, of all people, takes a look at ANTM and the Pussycat Dolls. As this is the 8th season of Top Model, you’d think he’d figured out how it works.

Smokin’ in the boy’s room.
Teens who watch R-rated movies and/or have tvs in their bedrooms are more likely to smoke. Because they’re less likely to have a parental unit paying attention to what they do? Nope–they’re influenced by those smokin’ movie stars.

Joel Stein hates babies.
Joel Stein doesn’t want to see those emailed baby pictures. He’s really scraping the bottom of the “who can I offend next” barrel. He’s not one of the redacted columnists, in case you were wondering.

That’s baseball!
It’s he-said, he-said over at the Dodgers. Outfielder J.D. Drew says he left the team because he needed job security, and the team says that he never asked for a complete no-trade cause. So, he went to Boston, where he got an extra 2 years on his contract–and an extra $37 mil. But it’s not about money.

Latino Power!
La Cucaracha is back in the paper. And even better, Heathcliff is gone.

RADAR LOVE: FBLA Goes to the Party

MRoshan_022107_2 reduced.JPG

FBLA went to Radar’s party at the Standard Hotel last night and had a surprisingly good time. There’s always that moment, when fully dressed, one thinks, “To hell with it”, and decides to climb out of the pumps and stay home and eat in front of the tv.

But we went and were glad we did (although David Carr’s predictions were way off.) The magazine’s check-in chick had actually heard of FBLA. She directed us towards the PR guy who pointed out Maer Roshan, Tinsley Mortimer and Fabiola Beracasa, and more importantly, the bar. The Patron tequila people thought a solid ice bar would be just dandy, but they were wrong. We spent a great deal of time dragging people over to meet the half-frozen bartender, just to make sure she didn’t die of hypothermia.

Chatting with the boys from Patrick McMullan, we learned that they’ll be shooting the Vanity Fair party and they didn’t need a date for that, thanks. Clint Spaulding, besides shooting for McMullan, is working with the Maysles, which made him the coolest person in the room, not that he knew it.

HuffPost’s Julia Allison and her cute blonde friend, Via Osgood, were trying to get people to look at her camera and yap about Radar. She’s got a unique approach–look a little lost and maybe someone will help you. We steered her to the man-candy: Mickey Kaus, Andrew Breitbart and Jay Alexander. We rescued Matthew Belloni, editor of Hollywood Reporter Esq.–or maybe it was the other way around, as she thought he was an agent, with CAA or Endeavor.

In the Trades: CGI, WGA and Xena

Bridge to Terabithia is well worth seeing, writes Justin Chang. Animation director Gabor Csupo lets the CGI run away with the movie, but the effects are ultimately outshone by stronger performances by AnnaSophia Robb and Josh Hutcherson. You loved the book, remember?

The Writer’s Guild awarded screenplay honors to Michael Arndt for Little Miss Sunshine in the original category and William Monahan for The Departed in the adapted category. Arndt won for his first produced screenplay, which he wrote over 5 years ago.

The WGA’s Robert Meltzer award for bravery went to the dozen writers at ANTM who lost their jobs last year after striking unsuccessfully for a WGA contract. So, when they do get to join, will they still have to pay the hefty initiation fee?

Casting notes: Lucy Lawless (yes, Xena!) wiil play a sexy but naive wife on ABC’s Football Wives. Louise Lombard, seen on CSI, is cast as a suburban, single mom who solves crimes in Judy’s Got a Gun. ABC also has an ensemble comedy about a team of paramedics and FOX has a similiar pilot with nurses.

Models Don’t Burp: ANTM Cycle 8

ANTM Cycle 8 doesn’t debut until Feb. 28, but YouTube has a whole slew of videos.

There’s plus-sized models, there’s ugly models, there’s boorish models. Tyra can claim they’re getting younger and younger, but that doesn’t make it true.
