Taking a Lunch Break… Instead, Here’s a Shot of Miley Cyrus (Gasp!) Tastefully Dressed

Lunch At Michaels

Our intrepid Lunch columnist Diane Clehane won’t be covering the scene at Michael’s today because she was up until the wee hours last night as one of the producers of The Fashion Group International’s 30th Annual Night of Stars event.

Diane was on full diva duty, wrangling Miley Cyrus (who came fully dressed and didn’t twerk once!) and Aretha Franklin and running the red carpet, where she witnessed Superstar Award honoree Marc Jacobs trading air kisses with Sofia Coppola, Olivia Munn and Kate Upton. After all that hobnobbing, we figured she could use a day off.

But, no worries, she’ll be back at her regular perch next week. In the meantime, here are some recent Lunch columns (and photos of Marc and Miley after the jump).

KPCC Visits the Site of Aretha’s Finest Gospel Hour

We can’t think of a better way to ease into Christmas weekend than to listen to KPCC 89.3 reporter Christopher Johnson‘s 40th-anniversary look at the LA recording of Aretha Franklin‘s live double album Amazing Grace.

The sessions took place over a two-day period in 1972 at South Central’s Temple Missionary Baptist Church. Franklin laid down classic gospel tracks alongside the legendary Reverend James Cleveland and the church’s Southern California Community Choir. Tantalizingly, there is one element of the timeless concert that is still waiting in the wings:

Ten years before he shot Tootsie, Sydney Pollack had a crew document the whole thing at New Temple. No movie has been officially released, but there is a trailer. In it, you can see Aretha ease down the aisle, through the standing ovation. Elegant. For sure, a queen – not just of soul, but of this moment, too. Her kaftan like light green sea spray. Sequined.

Celebrity Biographer David Ritz Gives Ghostwriting Tips

The list of celebrities that David Ritz has worked with is daunting: Ray Charles, R. Kelly, Aretha Franklin and Joe Perry, just to name a few. But the man who has ghostwritten so many autobiographies never set out to do that. In the latest installment of Mediabistro’s Hey, How’d You Do That? series, Ritz tells how he became a successful ghostwriter and gives advice to those with similar aspirations.

“When I first met Ray Charles, I didn’t know about ghostwriting; I was just going to do a biography of him,” Ritz recalled. “And then his agent asked me, ‘Which book would you be more interested in reading: a book about Ray Charles written by an egghead or a book written in his own voice?’ I told him that I would much rather read the book written in his own voice, and he told me, ‘You should write the book you would want to read, not the one you believe you should write.’ And that was a big turning point for me.”

Youth Inaugural Ball…Like a Prom With Booze…Really Pricey Booze

youthball.jpg

First off, the Youth Ball was at the Washington Hilton Hotel where Ronald Reagan was shot. Why did you need to know that? Because it’s weird and that’s why you read blogs at work.

There were two ballrooms. One room had Aretha Franklin, Rosario Dawson, Kanye West, Kid Rock, Fall Out Boy and the new president’s dance with the first lady.

Then there was another room if you couldn’t get into the other one. That one had food. We were in that room…never wanted to be in the sweaty no food room.

Anyway, the Youth Ball was a couple of corsages short of being a junior prom. There were even prom type photos that you could pose for (we looking forward to the email when they’re ready for viewing).

This gala was like if prom was only for nerds. Which is what you could say for all of DC. ‘Nerd only’ subway cars. ‘We don’t serve jocks’ restaurants. ‘Have to be a geek’ neighborhoods. We want to know why no one has asked us to leave yet.
