Assessing the Baron Davis ‘Alien Abduction’ Coverage

This ridiculous news item took flight thanks to a July 11 episode of Neal Brennan and Moshe Kasher‘s The Champs podcast. It officially crash landed exactly a week later by means of a Mea Culpa conversation between Knick hopeful Baron Davis and MSG Network’s Alan Hahn.

Now that the imaginary probes have been put away, all that’s left heading into the weekend is to award a few prizes  to some of the media folks that had the most fun with Davis’ close encounter of the made-up kind:

Best Slide Show – TIME: Northwestern/Medill grad and magazine writer/Web producer Samantha Grossman used the Davis podcast declaration to anchor a “10 Stars Who Have Seen Aliens” click-through.

New York Knicks Mentioned in ‘Typo of The Year’

Poynter’s “Regret The Error” has just published a great breakdown of all the big mistakes in media this year. The entire list is well worth a read, but we’d like to highlight the “Typo of The Year,” which ran in the Charlotte Observer.

The winning entry featured a few people from the city’s finest NBA franchise (of course we mean the Knicks). Baron Davis, according to the paper, was suffering from a very painful sounding injury:

Former LA Clipper Baron Davis Suffers from a Rather Painful Affliction

Fun news from the Charlotte Observer today, who reported that former Clippers point guard (and current New York Knick) Baron Davis is suffering from an extremely painful case of “herniated dick.” Ouch.

Somewhere, Donald Sterling and his girlfriends are kicking themselves for getting rid of Davis before they could spy on his new affliction in the shower.

Baron Davis Aces Play-by-Play Gig

Because of an injury, Baron Davis could not take part in his second annual sold out charity kickball game, held Sunday afternoon on the campus of his Alma Mater Crossroads High School in Santa Monica. So while a whiter, shorter, and more female bearded doppelganger stood in for him on the field, Davis did the PA system play-by-play from a fold-out table on the third base side. The Clipper-turned-Cavalier definitely has a future in broadcasting if he so chooses.

E! Entertainment reporter Ben Lyons redeemed himself from an early, no-call fly ball drop in right field to boot a pair of home runs and almost bring his Black team back from a huge early deficit to the Grey’s. Along with revisiting a recent interview mix-up with Lyons involving MTV, Davis repeatedly warned women in the audience whenever a certain athlete came to the plate. “Ladies, do not look into his eyes. He will hypnotize you.”

Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Heckles His Own Point Guard

Los Angeles Clippers owner and generally awful human being Donald Sterling has some new antics underway. Namely, sitting at courtside and heckling his own players during games. Clippers point guard Baron Davis, who Sterling is paying $13 million this year, is the main recipient of Sterling’s jeers.

Yahoo!’s Mark J. Spears witnessed Sterling in action over the weekend and gives us a sample:

– “Why are you in the game?”

– “Why did you take that shot?”

– “You’re out of shape!”

Sterling “started getting a lot more vocal during the second half of last season,” a team source told Spears. “He never had done that before at games. Baron’s his pet project. He absolutely hates Baron. He wants to get his money back.

Keep it classy Donald.

Watch the Box: New Hosts, Branded Entertainment

vintageTV.jpg

TV Guide Network added Lawrence Zarian aka The Fashion Guy, to co-host The Fashion Team, the weekly one-hour talk series that airs Sundays at 7p, if anyone is actually watching. The Fashion Gay would be a great moniker.

Farmers Almanac TV, the national PBS show based by the nearly 200-year old Farmer’s Almanac brand, chose urban gardening expert, Patti Moreno to host the series. Currently, the show airs on 90% of the nation’s public television stations, but not here. (EIC Judson Hale’s autobiography is fascinating, by the way.)

Sci Fi Channel ordered a new reality project called Run for Money, based on a Japanese show from Fuji Television. Contestants try to stay alive while “hunted”. Japanese TV also features breast milk squirting contests.

IFC offers a new series created by Reebok Entertainment, which is really one long commercial for the brand. Framed lets a Hollywood celebrity hang out with a sports figure, who just happens to endorse Reebok. Series debuts December 14 with the pairing of NBA All-Star Baron Davis and television and actress Emmanuelle Chriqui (Sloan on Entourage), both wearing Reeboks.
