Colin Myler Named President of Daily News

Colin Myler goodColin Myler, editor-in-chief of The New York Daily News, has a new role — president. Capital New York reports that Myler — who once bluntly explained that the paper features stupid content because people like dumb things — will continue as editor.

Myler has been editor of the Daily News since January of 2012. He was previously editor of the now folded News of The World, which as you know, got into a bit of trouble with the law. Myler also spent some time as executive editor of The New York Post.

In a memo obtained by Capital, Bill Holiber, the Daily News’ CEO, said of Myler, “His stewardship and leadership of the Daily News editorial brand – both in the paper and online – has been outstanding. His extensive media knowledge and experience is an invaluable asset for our future growth.”

New York Daily News Moves Three Blocks Away From New York Post, Journalists to Fight in The Streets

The battle will take place on Sixth, between 48th and 51st. Crain’s reports that The New York Daily News staffers — after months of working from home and New Jersey offices because their downtown office was flooded by Hurricane Sandy — are returning to the city. The only problem? The temporary office is at 1290 Sixth Avenue, only three blocks away from the tabloid’s number one competitor, The New York Post.

While Bill Holiber, publisher of the Daily News, said he expects the paper to be back at 4 New York Plaza in about three months, we must be prepared for News and Post employees to take their rivalry to the streets. And trust us, you don’t want to find yourself in the middle of a journalist fight.

The brawl will likely start with yelling about exclusives and threats to retweet typos, and then next thing you know one will yell something like “Embargo this bitch” and all hell will break loose. It’s not pretty.

New York Daily News Gets Printed with Help from New York Times, Newsday, Others

The New York Daily News got it bad when Hurricane Sandy came to visit. Its offices flooded and a printing plant in New Jersey was left without power. Luckily for the Daily News, it has some unlikely friends.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Daily News is being printed with the help of The New York Times, Newsday, the Newark Star-Ledger, the Bergen Record and the Hartford Courant. The AP and Jewish Week have also provided office space to Daily News staffers.

With the help of the otherwise rivals, the Daily News was able to print its regular edition and some of its other commercial printing work. “The outreach by our comrades has been amazing,” said the Daily News’ president and CEO, Bill Holiber.

This is why we love New York.

New York Daily News’ National Push is Paying Off

The New York Daily News’ relatively new national vertical — Daily News America, which debuted in July — is off to a strong start. Capital New York reports that traffic was up 21 percent in August, to about 19 million unique visitors.

In a memo obtained by Capital, the Daily News’ editor-in-chief Colin Myler and president Bill Holiber expressed their excitement:

We can now say with confidence that we are a national player. Every aspect of the content being created, whether it be national, international or local, has had a significant impact on our great web audience growth.

It’s only one month, but sure, get crazy. And because no Daily News story is complete without a New York Post diss, the memo also stated “In case you were wondering, the New York Post website does not figure in the ComScore premier league of players.”

Nicely done.

New York Daily News Makes Its iPad Debut

Mark down another major New York newspaper to add an iPad app as the New York Daily News joins the Times, Post, and Newsday on digital newsstands.  Daily News readers can now access real time news and a full electronic version of each day’s paper.  Daily News CEO Bill Holiber said the paper’s app offers a new dimension for audiences to connect with:

To address the needs of our readers who already love the experience of the Daily News print edition, we’ve combined the flexibility of a live app with the feel of the printed newspaper to bring a compelling experience.  As the voice of the most connected city in the world, we now have the most timely, accessible and user-friendly vehicle for sharing that voice.

Subscribers can download the app directly from iTunes for $1.99 for the first month or pay $11.99 for yearlong access.  The Daily News is also available on BlackBerry, iPhone, and android mobile devices.
